Edmonton Elks sit five starters for regular-season finale against Stamps
By 3Down Staff -October 23, 2025

The Edmonton Elks are giving a handful of key players the final week of the regular season off after being eliminated from playoff contention.

Right tackle Brett Boyko (foot), receivers Kurleigh Gittens Jr. (head) and Arkell Smith (healthy scratch), and defensive lineman Jared Brinkman (foot) will not dress on Friday against the Calgary Stampeders. Right guard Carter O'Donnell (head) will dress but only as a backup, making it five key starters out of the lineup. Backup defensive back Jaylin Williams and high-priced Canadian defensive end Robbie Smith will also be healthy scratches.

On offence, rookie American Greg Eiland will step in at right tackle, and Gregor MacKellar will get the nod at right guard, with Jaxon Morkin dressing for additional insurance. Jalon Calhoun and Tyson Middlemost will get their opportunity at the vacant receiver spots, while fullback Brad Hladik makes his debut.

Defensively, Tyreek Johnson will take first-team reps at defensive tackle. Defensive end Elijah Alston will dress as part of the rotation, while Canadian defensive back Jerrell Cummings will provide depth on the back end.

The Edmonton Elks (7-10) will host the Calgary Stampeders (10-7) at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday, October 24, with kickoff slated for 9:30 p.m. EDT. The Stampeders are coming off a blowout win over the Toronto Argonauts, while the Elks were eliminated from playoff contention following a loss to the B.C. Lions.

The weather forecast in Edmonton calls for a high of 14 degrees with a mix of sun and cloud. The game will be broadcast on TSN in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune in on 770 CHQR in Calgary and 880 CHED in Edmonton.

Calgary Stampeders lose receiver Jalen Philpot for final clash with Elks
By 3Down Staff -October 23, 2025

The Calgary Stampeders will wrap up the regular season without one of their top offensive weapons.

Canadian receiver Jalen Philpot will miss Friday's clash with the Edmonton Elks due to a knee injury that held him out of practice this week. The 25-year-old has appeared in 16 games this season, setting a new career high with 61 receptions for 830 yards and three touchdowns.

First overall CFL Draft pick Damien Alford will take Philpot's spot in the starting lineup, having caught 18 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns in 14 appearances. Fellow Canadian rookie Vyshonne Janusas will also dress for insurance.

Defensively, the Stamps will be without the services of American linebacker Kyle Wilson (knee), who has made 67 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles, and one forced fumble in 14 games. Defensive back Jacobe Covington will be a healthy scratch, while Canadian defensive tackle Kyle Samson returns to the practice roster.

American defensive back Lance Robinson will take over for Godfrey Onyeka at boundary halfback in his return from injury, while Canadian defensive lineman Justin Sambu returns to the pass rush rotation. Linebacker Kelechi Anyalabechi will dress for depth.

The Calgary Stampeders (10-7) will visit the Edmonton Elks (7-10) at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday, October 24, with kickoff slated for 9:30 p.m. EDT. The Stampeders are coming off a blowout win over the Toronto Argonauts, while the Elks were eliminated from playoff contention following a loss to the B.C. Lions.

16-0 Calgary at the half

EDM 3rd & 1 from the gun then CGY 2nd & 1 from the gun (at the 1). Both plays result in a loss of yards.

Edmonton had a FG deflected. Heads up play by Blanchard to cause a fumble on the return (saved a TD)

Rankin fumbles the ball at the 1 and 6 Elks pass by the loose ball. Great hustle play by Devine-Scott and heads up play by Roberts to recover loose ball in end zone. I honestly thought Edmonton would get the ball back at the 1 yard line - it was not an immediate recovery.

Stats Junkie

Calgary won't go far in the playoffs with a performance like that one.

The ruling on the play was a TD and the whistle sounded as soon as Rankin crossed the goal line.

The replay centre then had to rule on 2 components of the play. First, the ball was knocked loose before Rankin reached the goal line. The second was to determine if there was an immediate recovery of the loose ball. I counted 6-7 seconds before Calgary recovered the ball. In the past, the replay centre has determine that recoveries after 2-3 seconds are not immediate.

In situations where there is not an immediate recovery, the ball reverts to the last team in possession at the point of the fumble. Thus, Edmonton ball at the 1.

Wow, we got a view into a "name calling" misconduct when Proulx left his mic on around 1Q9:00.  Something like "he said it to the guy 3 times".  Must be the N word, or maybe F word (the other one).  Not many words will get you a misconduct in the CFL... the common swears are said all game every game.

I'd love to see the actual list!  It's not in the rule book...

I be never heard of the rule if it's not recovered in 2-3 seconds it goes back to the team who had previous possession, what's the rule # in the book I can't find it thx

Stats Junkie

There was never anything specific to 2-3 seconds but based on how this interpretation was applied by the command centre that was the extent of what 'immediately' referred to.

Quote from: 2023 CFL RulebookI.R.A.R. 4 Fumble before runner down by contact
Team A ball carrier fumbles the ball with Team B recovering. Officials rule down by contact at A's 30-yard line. Replay shows that the ball was loose before the runner was down.
RULING Reviewable play. B's ball at point of recovery with no advance if they immediately recover the ball.

Upon review, it appears as though this interpretation got a re-write in 2024. The word 'immediately' was replaced by 'clearly'. Based on the new interpretation, it appears as though the replay centre got it right.

Doh, yet another sneaky rule change that I'm not sure we were notified about?  It certainly wasn't listed in the "Changes" section of the 2024 book.

I too thought it was "immediate recovery".  There have been times in the past where the recovery was like 3s later and they still ruled it dead and not a TO.  According to the old rule, this one would have played out like Junkie says.  EDM ball at the 1.

Now Rankin gets to live on forever in the highlight reels of stupid plays.

With around 6 min left in 4th there was a blocked punt.  The blocker creamed EDM's P's plant leg, while his kick leg was still in the air.  I thought they made this RTK a few years ago.  Doesn't matter if the kick was blocked if the plant leg was hosed.

But no flag, no command flag, nothing.

I went into the 2025 rule book and can't find any definition anymore of RTK (it is listed as a major foul, but no section for it?).  I see no reference to the word "plant", nor exceptions in the CTK rule.

Has the CFL quietly eliminated (reversed!) the RTK/plant-leg exception??  There was another plant leg hit I saw this season and that too didn't get a flag.

What's going on here?
