Blue Bombers Transactions - April 20, 2024

WINNIPEG, MB., April 20, 2024 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed American receiver Myron Mitchell.

Mitchell (6-1, 180; Alabama-Birmingham; born: June 17, 1998, in Jasper, AL) joins the Blue Bombers after spending last season with the Birmingham Stallions. Originally signed by the Michigan Panthers, Mitchell was traded to the Stallions and appeared in 10 games, pulling in 15 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown while helping Birmingham capture its second consecutive USFL title.

Mitchell signed his first pro deal with the Minnesota Vikings in May of 2021 as an undrafted free agent and appeared in one game while spending most of the season on the practice squad before his release in late August of 2022.

He began his collegiate career at Butler Community College (2016-17) before transferring to UAB (2019-20) where he had 63 catches for 990 yards and seven touchdowns while also handling punt and kickoff return chores.

The club has also transferred American defensive lineman Nate Givhan to the retired list.

Myron Mitchell looks pretty good, should be good TC competition at receiver.

Some Lawler type catches on the sides there.  Even a returner too eh?  Interesting.

Everyone looks good on their highlight film....we'll see what he looks like playing against pros in training camp

Ok. According to the roster, we currently have 94 players on the roster. A couple of tryout camps later this week and there will probably be a few more players signed. Then of course there are the 2 drafts on the 30th.

I don't think we're expecting any veterans to retire but we may see a few rookies decide to not continue. As we find and sign some new bodies we may see somewhat of an off setting cuts before even the mini camp.

The biggest groups signed so far are DB's and WR's. Over 20 of each at the moment.  I'd say we're a little light on the OL with only 11.

Let the search and shuffling proceed. Excited to see who we draft and at what positions.

Might we see a few players weeded out at the try out camps this weekend?  Do they invite signees to come to those, rather than make the trip all the way to Winnipeg?

Are rookie camps happening here this year?  I know in the past, they were held south of the border, but with the weather here, now, I can't see why they'd be anywhere else...

I don't think some players currently signed go to the try out camps. However some players will be perceived to be " better " in tryout camps than a few already signed for TC.

As an example we have 12 import rookie DB's. I have no idea what the depth chart looks like in the secondary for those players. CB, DHB or SAM. If a given player is listed as 4th at strong side and they find someone that appears to be " better " then one in and one out.

TC roster size has to be manageable and there are limits at set dates.

Just guessing but I would expect another 6 or so to be signed coming out of the try out camps. OTOH, we never really know whether signings are " new " finds or someone they have been watching on neg lists. Doesn't really matter.

We're in the final couple of weeks before TC and there will be some changes.

IIRC, haven't there been invites to the tryout camps where they waived the $100 "I'm serious about this" fee for players either under contract or that had been offered a contract, just for a better look see?

It would make sense to bring them in where it will be a lot cheaper to get actual eyes on them and not just work off tape and phone calls.

They seem to bring in a boatload of receivers and DB's every year whether they need them or not, this seems very inefficient to me and wastes a lot of peoples time. I wonder if the scouts are just filling number quotas of players brought in or if those two groups are the easiest to find due to the high number of candidates looking for jobs.  Like, why not bring in 10 new D-linemen instead to fight for Jeffcoat and Walker's jobs, it would make more sense.

You need that many DB's and WR's in order to run drills. Currently we have 4 QB's that have to have someone to throw to.

Can add DL or OL but you need to have those skill positions to run the mostly non contact quick patterns being run etc.

That and yes, looking for the best player and several will be kept on PR. It's also a group where injuries will occur to a large number in TC and during the season.

Every team follows a similar roster balance in TC.
