Title: Coaching staff...QB's
Post by: bigbuff33 on January 07, 2020, 12:28:17 PM
Just wondering what is taking so long to put together our coaching staff.
Not a criticism..you know they are working at it...

Same goes for the QB situation...
I'm in no way suggesting that Bombers brass is sitting on its hands.
We know they are going to do what's best for the team...

But it sure is surprising that by now we haven't settled on these two situations.

It's January 7th. The holidays ended barely a week ago.

Not sure how anything is taking "so long" at this juncture.

I have a feeling it's already pretty much worked out on all fronts (OC+QB) and just needs the rubberstamping.  That seems to be the NAT Mafia's M.O.

In on of Walters' year end interviews, he said he knew who he wanted as OC (I assumed it was Buck) and it was of merger of going through the process of the end of year stuff in the order that MOS wanted it.

If it is Buck - I'm sure it's already agreed on and they are just running through their other stuff and then took a break for the holidays.

The new OC coach is Buck P.  I have talked to his father-in-law and the position was his weeks ago

I'm not too excited about Buck, liked the guy but he will go through some growing pains.

If true, I'm all for it.  Recruit from within.  Buck knows the system.  Players know Buck.  He'll cost like half as much as Lapo.  Can coaches get a low salary with performance bonuses (wins or yards for OCs)?  To save ourselves future coach-SMS grief, why not pay him small but with huge win bonuses?  Because...

If it turns out he can't handle it and we lose like 7 in a row to start the season, we ditch or demote him pronto and bring in a vet OC.  That's why a low SMS-hit amount would be handy.

That said, I'm optimistic he can get it done!  And being an ex-QB can have its advantages from a playcalling standpoint...

Bonus heavy contracts are hard to swing, because it's never a solitary achievable goal, especially in team sports.  Best you would likely get away with, even if it was possible, would be 20%, and that's not going to make a significant difference.

As far as Buck being the new OC, not the worst move the Bombers could make.  What are the other options?  McAdoo?

You mean like every single new OC, DC, HC or coach in general goes through?

We suspected all along that Buck would be a likely successor.....I just wonder if he can make the transition quickly enough to prevent a drop off in our offensive production.   Hoping only the best for Buck!!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if I had a dollar for every time someone had the inside scoop due to an insider source on these forums I would be a millionaire. I hope you are right though.

This must be something MOS likes to do, wait until all the coaches are picked through and take what is left.

I see Thorpe has signed with EDM so I guess we stick with Hall again unless he moves one of his buddies up from defensive assists to DC. Hall came through last year near the end but his D was up and down most of the season. So do we keep Hall because Lapo moved on and MOS would have to go with two new co-ordinators or do we make a change at DC early and not wait for the old Hall's d to come back.

Literally no one is talking about a switch up at DC. No doubt we will go with the guy that ended a 29 year championship drought.

I'm hoping that the Bombers are working quietly behind the scenes to put together a coaching staff. If nothing is announced next week then I'll worry.

You don't have to hope. Of course they are. What do you think they'd be doing?

Expect 50% chance Hall returns, 100% chance O'Shea replaces him internally if he decides not to.

Probably right.

Btw my post was regarding Hall being fired and replaced. Him deciding to retire is a different story.

0% chance Hall is fired, not going to happen under O'Shea.

I agree that Hall won't be fired but as I've said before he may retire and if he does I believe that he will be replaced internally. If this happens we'll need a receivers coach and someone to replace whoever succeeds Hall.

So we win a championship for the first time in 29 years, primarily because the defense stood on its head and didn?t allow peanuts for points in the 3 playoff games and we re still thinking we re firing the guy?? Man is it that cold out there?!? Hall is going no where unless he decides otherwise and since we re a couple of weeks away from free agency, I m thinking he?s staying on. He wouldn?t handcuff Osh by retiring at the last minute

Ha ha ha......well, you never know when a team might decide to save some money and not sign a coaching staff.

It's not like we're in a new regime and are starting from scratch. Bucky is likely our new OC and we will probably hire one new name to serve as a position coach.

I'm not sure what's the worry...

With one of our coordinators gone and most likely replaced with a rookie, I cannot see the Bombers looking to taking any further risk to the continuity that the club revels in by replacing Hall. His defence did a masterful job in the playoffs and through most of the last 2 years quite frankly.

Agreed, the D played very well at the end of 2018 and throughout the playoffs.

Lapo handled receivers, so I assume Buck will continue to handle QBs while OC so that we don't need to pay for 2 new coaches.

Slight difference between handling Rec as OC and handling QB's...

Other than the technicality that it is a laterally different position, no it's not

So, you think coaching rec's is the same skill level / time commitment required for coaching QB's?  Sorry if I disagree...

Buck Pierce was a starting QB in the CFL. You don't think QB's understand all that goes into route running, blocking assignments and the art of being a receiver?

The time frame a coach spends during practice and film study during the season is the same. An hour is still an hour. Coaching QB's will at time be on an individual basis and at times on a broader format. That's exactly the same as it would be with receivers.

I think Buck will do fine.  The players like him and he's a good communicator.  It will take a year or two for him to settle in the role but I think he will do fine.

Depends on who our QBs are, and who our receivers are.

Yes, I think the time commitment is about the same and that Buck can handle both.

Buck was already handling the QBs so he adds OC to the title and we find someone to coach the receivers. Besides Buck already played QB so IMO he's more qualified than LaPo for this. And it's not like we'll have a rookie at QB.

I agree with you, but I still think we'll hire another position coach.

Buck knows better than anyone if he?s ready or willing to take on this substantial responsibility.
OC is not some position filled by seniority, next man up, or winner of the popularity contest.
It?s a calling,a mindset, and a demanding position that requires a huge commitment to preparation and loss of family time.
To a person we would love nothing more than to see him succeed at whatever he does. I guess we?ll find out soon if he?s the best QB coach in BB history, or something else.

Seems to be taking a long time putting our staff together...
Though I would imagine O'Shea and Walters just want to make sure they are getting the right people to coach the way they like.
After coaches are set...then the big decisions will be coming down about who they see as our QB's.
