WINNIPEG, MB., May 9, 2019 -  The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today the club has signed international wide receiver Lucky Whitehead.

Whitehead (5'9, 180, Florida Atlantic University, June 2, 1992 in Manassas, VA.) attended the club's mini-camp last month in Florida. He played three seasons in the NFL after being signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Whitehead had 1,151 total return yards, 189 rushing yards and nine receptions for 64 receiving yards in 30 games. Whitehead spent his two-year college career at Florida Atlantic, totaling 896 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns in 19 games.

Be interesting to see what he can bring, and if he can wrap his head around the Canadian Nuances. I would think he will be playing with a bit of a chip on his shoulder as to how he got a raw deal in the NFL..

I read up on him a bit. Seems like mostly self-inflicted issues to me but hopefully those things are in the past. I don't think talent was ever a question, especially as a returner.

OK, now we have a legit dedicated returner.  No fair catch, wider field, 12 players, we will have to see if he can adapt.  Hopefully that is a big yes...

Thoughts on him being our answer to the Int receiver question? If so, is our pencilled in lineup potentially Adams, Thompkins, Demski, Wolitarsky, Whitehead (with Woli swinging inside as a SB and Whitehead as a WR)?

30 NFL games: Receiver, rusher and returner so he has some experience and versatility. Could be / should be an early favorite. There are a few other rookie receivers with some recent experience (AAF ) and some NFL as well.

Versatility is a very important aspect for an import in making a CFL roster. Whether he's a full time starter or a DI that gets used in various ways, he's an interesting prospect.

I'm liking Bailey, Stewart, Johnson and Hazel among the new comers as well.

Now wondering if adding a new player results in an off setting deletion. Lawler comes to mind. He only signed Oct 18 so he only had an early sniff. Wasn't activated for game 18 against Edmonton.  Since then we've looked at a long list of receivers.

Curious Whitehead's signing took longer or perhaps just the announcement was delayed. Not an issue just curious what it meant if anything.

he could also be the perfect replacement for Dressler....with ability to run the sweeps and other running type swing plays...and allow us to have a big bodied outside guy as the other new Import...how i see it possibly now is Adams/Demski/Woli/Lucky and one of either Baily/C.Washington or Hazel getting the outside spot to at least start the season...depending on how we work the ratio too could see one of the outside guys who don't start, or Nelson as a DI...especially once Kongbo is ready as he can take what most likely is Roh's DI spot and be our rotational end allowing us the DI to be used at a skill position.

Sounds like a few of us are not convinced that Thompkins has a lock to start or even make the team. He wasn't horrible but the prospects do sound interesting.

I actually like Thompkins and feel he was under utilized but may be a victim of team going with age, though I bet he can be a productive slot for a good 2-3 years yet..training camp will be interesting for sure

Very interesting signing....Whitehead and Adams can wreak some havoc for opposition defence's ..I think this guy is going to luv our wide field with the speed he has...Hope he can pick up the nuances of our game in a hurry

I agree. Many of this year's rookies are 3-7 years younger potentially and might have more upside.

OTOH, Thompkins has the advantage of playing most of last year and it may take some of the better rookies time to adjust to waggle and CFL rules.

So he'll get to compete at TC and the chips will fall where they fall. He might be less willing to take a PR spot than a 2019 rookie, so that might be part of a deciding issue.

Cautiously optimistic, but we've been burned before with the likes of Kenny Stafford and Adarius Bowman.
Let's see how he produces in pre-season before anointing him as Dressler's replacement !  ???

Without any televised pre-season  games ole Lucky could well be gone before many of us get to see him play.  If that happens he will be forever remembered as the "legend of Lucky Whitehead" not to be confused with the "legend of Tiny Montgomery".  :-\

There is always reason to be optimistic about some of the new recruits. Some more than others but sometimes the " others " rise to the front. It will be interesting to hear TC reports.

I don't think anyone is anointing him as anything, just stating that IF he has his head in the right space and is going to come in and work hard then he has talents that are tailor made for the CFL and mirror some of the attributes of Dressler.

I have seen enough former NFLers come into the CFL, and be lazy and entitled in TC and be among the first cuts, to know nothing is a given. He is a blue chip prospect though if he is serious about it and can pick up the game.

He can move that's for sure, lots of evidence he may be a good returner, hopefully he is also a good receiver.

Highlight films can be deceptive but that did look impressive.

What I liked most was that he seemed to have very good field of vision and used his speed very well. He looked very fast and with great agility which on the CFL field is going to make him even more dangerous.

With Matthews in the fold, if we can get a Chris Rainey like contribution from him that would still be huge. (PT offence/Returner)

Dedicated returner, and occasional jet sweep would be awesome...

Title: Re: ...and Lucky Whitehead signs with the Bombers

Now the receiver battles will be for only one other starting position ( now that we have Matthews ) possibly a DI ( returner / receiver type ) and a couple of PR spots.  There are 11 receivers fighting it out for those spots.

Inevitably a few players suffer early injuries and that hurts their chances.

Can't wait for TC even more after these recent signings.

I think we will have a 3rd Int'l starter and a dedicated returner. So 2 spots on the AR.

I think we will have a 3rd Int'l starter and a dedicated returner. So 2 spots on the AR.

We've had problems getting a DI spot for a returner in recent seasons. Medlock, Roh, a DB and a LB have been where we've had our DI's.

I'm not saying that couldn't change but where would the give come from when you consider who those players and needs are going to be?  Both the DL and secondary are strong areas.

The WIL and DI are the area where we'll have the least experience on offense. Some comments even suggested 3 import OL as a choice / need early in the season.

Behind this is the possibility of a ratio change in 2019. So who knows exactly how all this works out at the moment.

when Kongbo is game ready, he can fill Roh's roster spot and allow us to use a DI in a returner role

Matthews
Adams

Demski
Wolly (another reason we couldn't sign Solly... Wolly and Solly is a non starter for me...)

5th Int:

Bailey, Rasheed    WR    I    6'2    200    25    Delaware Valley University
Hazel, Matt    WR    I    6'3    190    27    Coastal Carolina University
Johnson, Garrett    WR    I    5'11    175    23    University of Kentucky
89       Lawler, Kenny    WR    I    6'2    180    24    California
3       Nelson, Charles    WR    I    5'8    170    23    Oregon
Stewart, Josh    WR    I    6'4    205    24    University of Texas at San Antonio
2       Thompkins, Kenbrell    WR    I    6'1    198    30    Cincinnati
      Walker, Kenneth    WR    I    5'9    188    25    UCLA
6       Washington, Corey    WR    I    6'4    208    27    Newberry College
87       Whitehead, Lucky    WR    I    5'9    180    26    Florida Atlantic
Wilson, Tim    WR    I    5'9    170    25    East Stroudsburg University

5th Nat (if we start 3 Nat WR)
81       Petermann, Daniel    WR    N    5'11    205    23    McMaster University
                Richards, Malik
13       Simonise, Rashaun    WR    N    6'4    200    23    University of Calgary

The corps just got a lot more attractive, Nichols must be loving this, and Lapo...

Whitehead is a talented returner, but I doubt we're looking at him for a receiver spot (6 catches in his 3 year NFL career).

A 5 minute google session shows more than a few red flags. Dallas called the cops to check up on him because they were worried. He missed a morning meeting after instagramming at 3 AM. Dog-napping and a shop lifting incident (The complainant had his social security number, so at least his ID was there even tho the charges were dropped). Due in court in May to face a December running a red light, DUI arrest that includes 5 charges.

if you truly wanted to, you could google search red flags all over for a good majority of players i the league, not to mention the stuff that never made the news, or were brought to light...to me thats a big whoopdido...as long as there aren't charges or accusations of abuse to woman..kids..animals or drug peddling charges....i'm fine with it

Pretty sure there isn't a more diligent crew in the CFL than MOS, Walters and Miller when it comes to character issues.  He wouldn't be at camp unless all of the issues were resolved and his attitude and commitment were in lock step with the team...

Sure, you could find bad stuff about a bunch of players, but Whitehead has more red flags than Duron Carter. It always makes me laugh when folks make excuses for our players with a past, while making fun of other GM's who sign other players with a past.

I have watched Whitehead as the Cowboys are my favorite team.  Don't get too excited with this guy he is not a receiver.  He is a gimmick or gadget player.  He is good on Jet Sweeps and so so on kickoffs & punts, but nothing special. Maybe the CFL will suit him better but there is a reason he didn't stick in the NFL with another team.

More red flags than Duron Carter?  He has had on field dust ups with his QB?  Repeated drug offenses when he knew what he was doing was illegal?  Refer's to his union brothers as part of a "slave rebellion"?  Requires continuous counseling and monitoring to prevent relapse of bad behaviour.

Pretty sure if you look in a dictionary under "Red Flags", Duron Carter's picture is there...

Again, if there was a character issue that was beyond resolving, no way Walters signs him.

I remember watching Lucky when he was with the Cowboys, I was a fan of his then until he ran into issues. Looking for good things from him. His style reminds me of Dressler for sure and Cole Beasley, speed, good hands, and versatile on offence as well as a legit returner. If he pans out in training camp, he will be a fan favourite.
