**** this was a long week. I've been waiting for this game since the final whistle in Edmonton last week. Bombers need to be ready to bring it in a hostile environment. Offence needs to have the pedal down from start to finish and the defence needs to continue the momentum they've built over the last several weeks. Collaros, Bridge.. who cares. If we can bring pressure with the front 7 and DBs be on lockdown it won't matter who they got behind Centre.

Nothing more to be said about this game. The stakes are high, it's against our rival in there building. Just win. By 1 point or 40 points, just win.

Bombers 24
Riders    17

I doubt they are dressing 4 QB's. One would have to be a DI and that would force them to eliminate one of their normal DI's.

Pretty sure the Bombers game planned for Collaros, you really don't need to game plan for Bridge.

Down in the deep deep SW Desert with only internet access today for a few hours and maybe tomorrow if I can get back in time.. Will try and get back to civilization to at least catch the score. Not bad out for Searchlight NV (+21 C) at the moment. Not the end of the world but I think I can see it from here!

Hoping the Bombers win - I think it will be very very close.

We have a decent shot at winning this game even though is it in Moasic.  We are relatively healthy and overall a better team than the Riders regardless of Labour Day and the BB.  Even if Collaros starts I think it remains a pretty iffy offence and Collaros has to be nervous about the next hit.  Keep the pressure on him all day long.  Score early and keep the crowd out of it.

We gave away the LDC and the BB. Obviously we're not going to win 31-0 but if we protect the football, stop the Sask running game and put pressure on whoever their QB is we win the game. GO BLUE

It's going to be SO cold that the stadium won't be near as loud as it can be...that should give an edge to the Bombers.

Windchills will be in the negative 20s.... Wondering whom that helps...

Loffler and Bighill. No one wants to catch a ball expecting a hit from either of these two.

Andrew Harris is from Winnipeg. He'll run in -50.

Made it to Regina.  Chatted with a couple of WPG fans in the hotel.

Just a scant few hours until game time!  And now no Collaros!  Still don't know where I'll sit, but I'm sure it'll be good.  I say bring on all the cold nature can muster.  The WPG fans who trekked out won't stay in their hotels.  They'll show up!  The Greenies will be too cold and stay home.  Should be loadsa fun since it will only be hardcore CFL fans there if it's -20C windchill.

Made it through quarter 1 of the 2007 Grey Cup.

Much like the 2001 Grey Cup, the Bombers should of had a bigger lead. Charles Roberts was awful.

3 quarters to go.

Bridges is better than Collaros I think the coach made the move knowing Bridges can run. Bombers have to play well. Bridges made throws against us. Defense has to stop the run , Sask likes to throw to the corners especially Bridges at qb.

Bridge has had a horrible year.  Not all his fault, coaches don't trust him and don't give him leeway to throw the ball downfield.

It should be an easy game for the Winnipeg defense...but often in the CFL we find awful QBs that have a lights out game.  That's the only hope the Riders have.  I think the Riders defense will play well..but they are going to be on the field a lot.

Only online for a few hours or more than back to the desert, is Santos-Knox playing? I am trying to rig internet access (off a sat.) where I am but may not be able to. Leaving in about 2 hours back to Searchlight and may not find out what goes on.

Just bought my ticket and managed to get it printed at the hotel.  Waiting till the last minute pays off!  I got a 40yl ticket for peanuts!

I'm kickin' back watching the TSN coverage that just came on TV.  Orleski is at Mosaic!  Yay

If we're clearly winning near the end I'm coming down to your section for some high-5's.  I hope some Bombers see you guys there and throw you some TD balls!

Oh ya, and I discovered the Ticketmaster "verified resale" seems to put a floor on price so they don't compete with their regular tickets.  So going there for a deal is useless (unless it's a total sellout).  Stubhub is where it's at.

Bombers should win.  Let's put it this way, if we lose, ....heads will roll.  Bridge played like he was ambivalent the last time he was in.  Of course Sask will have prepared him, and he could run, more than Zac! This should be a feast for the Bombers.

Glad to see you more upbeat DM!  As for prepared Bridge... what a dumb thing for Jones to do: practicing Collaros all week except for the final day?  All for a ruse?  Bridge should have been #1 practicer all week.

I bet SSK fans will be booing the playcalling for Bridge like they always do after they see the run/screen/run/screen/run fail for the Nth time.

Ridersfan forum is going apoplectic about the Collaros news. 90% of them have written off the season.  Huge change from a couple of days ago.

Someone made a good point: so far don't we just have TSN's word for Collaros being out?  SSK hasn't announced it officially yet, have they?  Could be a double-bluff by Jones... or... what if Collaros doesn't start: what if Collaros comes in on throwing downs??  What if it's a reverse-platoon?  Until it's official from Jones, I wouldn't rule about anything.

I think they'll be prepared more than ever before.  And the coordinator plans will be obscenely good.  They've been working on this for years and will not accept failure.  The leaders are prepared.  I've never seen such determination in MOS and Lapo as they've been showing in the interviews.

Stegall just said "Nic Demski" 5 times on TSN and he almost stumbled on it again.  Bet he practiced that 100 times at home.  Nic Demski.  Nic Demski.

Indeed, except that means mr biggest rider fan in the world Glen Suitor is doing it.

Stuck in Yorkton with about 20 rider fans (family gathering). I have extra need for a big game by the B.B. today.

Huh?  That's weird.  Very few other Rider fans appear to agree.  What's their rationale?  One would think even platooning Collaros/Bridge would have been better than Bridge-only.

I doubt 4 figures... but I'd love to be pleasantly surprised.  As a percentage of the actual green-crowd that shows up, we might be higher than LDC (due to the cold).

For this game today, who calls the majority of the defensive plays( MOS, Hall or the Assist and Hall/MOS), do we rush only 4 and do our DB's play 10-15 yards off the receivers on the line?

Not concerned about the who or how, only the result today. Might be a bit more cautious if JSK isn't dressing but I'd expect lots of pressure. Riders are also missing their best RB and a few other starters.

I hope there is no snow and Harris runs for 200 yards.

Just a thought. I don't believe ( for a multitude of reasons ) that the Riders will have much success with long time consuming / long yardage drives. In theory IMO they will be playing more towards the big play type of offense which is not particularly in their skill set.

So. We should win TOP easily if that happens. The question will be can we / do we limit / eliminate the big plays on jump balls or missed assignments? IMO, yes we will.

As the game progresses I can see momentum being gained by the Bombers as the Rider defense tires

Depends on how big a lead but we've seen the defense give up 14+ points in less than 5 minutes a couple of times. Play the game until the final whistle unless we're up like the TiCats today.

What was the botch up with the time late in the quarter? Should have been running the hurry-up offence. Should not have been in that position anyway due to the dumb unnecessary roughness penalty. Sask going to try and bait our o-lineman, need to hold back on that kind of stuff in a close game.

Bridge, 42 yards passing! Our defence playing as good as you could expect. Gave them 3 points on the long runback.

Nichols needs to burn Sask better on their blitzing. Hopefully they can do some adjustment at halftime.

Watch for the misdirection and the play actions in the 3rd. Its coming. And will come alot if the Riders coaches do their job. I'm worried about our DB's. Gotta hope our front 7/8 gets after Bridge. The Riders are running the ball 100% of the time on 1st down. We can't bite on the wrong player in the Riders RPO.

Havent heard Knox's name mentioned once.
Bighill's taken the wrong angle on a runner a couple of times.
This simply means our D can be better in the second half.

As for our return game... I've said it before. The other guys
are converging so fast, there is no time to stand there and pick
your spot. Just secure the ball and GO! Would get us at least 5 yards
instead of -5, and the odd time an opening may appear.

Regardless I mostly blame Neufeld on that one. We don?t know what made that play take long. Maybe it was necessary. We do know that unnecessary roughness penalties are... unnecessary.

They always play like that, they got a lot of talkers, best way to shut them up is score and score often.

You do know he's not playing todY.

No I didnt. Thanks.

As for not taking the ball at the beginning of the half, I wouldn't do it.
Why give the other team an extra possession?  Maybe they know the wind will
get stronger in the 4th?

Looks like it worked out OK though.

It wasn't as pretty ( blowout ) as the ESF but it was hard fought and a win. In the end that's all that matters.

Playing against Calgary will require a different game plan.

Credit to Fogg. Didn't see him get beat. He made a great int and return which prevented a possible score and led to Bomber points. While it was a bad throw by Bridges due to pressure, Fogg made the read to be in position and gets credit for a very important play and big return.

The second replay showed that Sayles bumped him

Challenge it anyway to slow their momentum down. No use keeping it in your pocket all game.

DB's that get thrown at a lot quite often lead in int's. So it's not as black and white as leads in ints.

In this game he didn't give up any long passes or a TD. He made a very good play resulting from forced throw by the DL. He did his job well today and didn't let us down. Can't ask for much more.

Yes it will be easier against Stamps by our offence against their D. Jones D was the biggest challenge for our offence in these playoffs. Passed it.

Just got back to the hotel.  WOOHOOO GO BLUE

We got no info at the field.  I have no idea if Bighill's wrist is broken after I saw it live with my binocs.  Didn't see him come back.  And Nichols disappeared in the 4th, hope that's not an injury I didn't see.

Luckily, I have this wonderful thread to catch up on all the details... no need to fill me in, I'm reading them now.

Boy were the SSK fans pissed off with that final hit.  I barely caught the replay so I can't speak to it.  But the fans were pissed.  That's their excuse now.  Maybe they should have given them 15 retroactively, as it wouldn't have impacted the result.  Oh well, I look forward to discussing.

I hi-5'ed as many WPG fans as I could find.  Didn't spot Goldie, though I did go to the tour section as fast as I could after the whistle.

I agree that Sask defence is very good, possibly best in league, but Calgary has a far more potent offence,  They also have a quarterback, unlike Sask.  But we can beat them, as we showed recently.

Hopefully Santos-Knox is ready by next week. Seems he was close to dressing today.

NOt sure about Bighill. Nothing really being mentioned on the CJOB post game show so far about him, so maybe he was just nicked up a bit.

Nichols was not hurt as far as I know. They just wanted to run the ball at the end to run down the time clock, so Streve's was left in to mix up the run game.

I don?t blame them for being pissed. Don?t blame the red either. His refcam showed that his view of it was blocked. But it was definitely a dirty hit. And it definitely could?ve impacted the game. Jeffcoat put the game at risk with that hit.

Wow, very little info on the thread.  Was the TSN broadcast that inept?  Obviously no info about Bighill (see my new thread for that).

But what was the info regarding Nichols?  It was Strev all the way at around 4:00 until the whistle.  Even on critical 2nd downs, like the final one that we could have used Nichols.  Was Nichols hurt or was this strategy by MOS?

I was going to blow a gasket if MOS benched Nichols for strategy and we didn't get a decent drive and lost the game.  If we learned anything this year, it's that we need critical clock-draining drives in the last 5:00 when we're up.

Thank MOS the gambit payed off... or is Nichols hurt??

Nichols isn?t hurt.  Streveler was put in for the Mack truck package to burn the clock.  Nichols was keeping warm on the sidelines in case he needed to go back in.

It was great game planning by the Bombers.  Big boy ground and pound team.

Just had a quick look on Riderfans expecting a ton of bile about refs and head shots etc, and there was a fair bit of that.  But there was a thread dedicated to congratulating the Bombers.  A good many classy posts saying that the better team won, that they were out-coached and that they were badly beaten on both lines of scrimmage.
I was impressed.  it was a lot more rational than is sometimes the case.

There was one funny bit where a post was comprised of only this:    **** the bombers.
A reply said that he agreed but his kid said he was going to support Winnipeg for the rest of the season.  The father said he grounded him for 8 weeks.  Then  he said he was joking, only for two weeks!

It worked in the end, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time WPG has put in Strev for such a series in the 4th when we were only up by 5?  I wouldn't have necessarily picked that moment (a playoff game) to try something new!  The only thing I can think of is Strev's running dimension better matched the conditions.  But still...

Welcome 55 Stick!  We sure do.  Teams might think twice before trying to knock Nichols out of a game, as then they'll have to contend with Strev, and he's still a relatively unknown quantity.

'19 will be sweet with the Nichols/Strev combo.  Not to mention '18!!!!

Ya, SSK was sending much more heat than usual all night.  Those DE's were covering the ends quite well too, especially with Strev in.  Funny, SSK sends 3 like >50% of the time all year but for this game it seemed like 25% or less.  I'll have to do a better survey when I get home to the PVR.  I think that's why Lapo abandoned the long ball after the first 2 series.

Hey, can someone tell me if all the PI and IC we took all night were legit, or weak?  Especially on SSK's only TD drive (I call it the penalty TD).  Were all of those calls legit?  That's just crazy and not like WPG at all.  MOS needs to rip them a new one.  At least one of those PIs looked completely unnecessary on our part.

On the other angle it showed that Alexander moved into the receiver and more or less allowed himself to get run into. Not sure if it was purposeful or not but it was a questionable call at least. Maybe it was worth a challenge, maybe not. Wouldn't it suck to lose that one and then not be able to challenge another call in the final seconds of the game.

D has been playing like the best unit for the last number of games.  Hall has improved as the talent has improved.  Hall will stay if we beat Calgary.  Still has a chance as it sits now.  I can understand the desire to move on but please show him and the D some respect.  We have great unit that is coached very well.

Never said I loved Hall but it's clear that you don't.  It's ok for myself and others to celebrate the success.  You have had 2.5 years to never stop complaining on here about the D and Hall.  Please give us 2.5 hours to enjoy a massive win.

You really have to hand it to our D and Hall for one massive reason today:

WPG D completely stopped the SSK run game ... minus Bridge scrambles.

It took me a while but I figured it out: Hall gave them the Bridge run game.  We took away the deep.  Took away the run.  Took away the screen.  We made them short throw and gave them Bridge.  That was it.

Pretty darn good accomplishment to stop Thigpen and Marshall dead in their tracks!!  That is no easy feat.  SSK gameplans around those guys getting 200 rush yards a game.  That's their whole plan!!

I think the Hall plan was masterful and it's no mistake it turned out this way.  It would have been nicer to limit Bridge to maybe half that number of rush yards, but you can't hold them to zero O.  There's a few times our DE's got really close to stopping him but just came up short.  Even Biggie missed Bridge a few times, misjudging his speed.

If anyone disagrees with me, just look at the rush yards put up against CGY by SSK this year!  And that's with Collaros, a non-threat to run, in!

Only thing that Sask could do to win was to get points on D or STs or get the run game going.  Our plan and execution on D was great, agree that we should have limited Bridge on the ground more.  Knox would have helped for sure but Wild and Wilson played well.

I did not see a single pass to Thompkins.  I thought he had one, but it turned out it was Dressler!  I wasn't really watching routes today so I don't know if he was even in much and/or open.  Maybe someone else paid him more attention and can report.

Thompkins is usually pretty good on 2nd down: usually good for 1 or 2 1st downs a game.  Maybe Thompkins had trouble with his first super cold game?  Maybe Chevelle was right... maybe LDW was the one to keep  ;) :D

Demski just needs to get the ball...and move north/south...tries doing too much juking and jiving and then at that point is smothered...same issue he had in Sask...he wasn't doing that in first half of year...but reverted to it ...I wouldn't have him as a priority free agent guy...I'd actually like to see us use Augustine in his role to be honest....better ball carrier and has decent hands...

Demski is a good national receiver. I like him. The only thing I can't stand is his propensity to bounce everything to the outside. That one screen in the semi-final game he bounced out for 2 instead of taking 5 or more inside. Someone needs to tell him to run straight ahead first, bounce second.

I understand the frustration with Demski's preference to try and "take the corner" for the possibility of big yards, but that's something I think I've come to accept about his style/mindset. Most of the time, he won't make the corner, and he'll have a minimal gain, but once in a blue moon, he'll make that corner and grab huge yards.
My biggest concern about him going into this past weekend's game, was his ability to secure the ball. I don't have any solid data to back this, but I feel like he fumbles the ball a lot while fighting for extra yards. The cold weather had me even more worried about it, but he managed to play a clean game. That's a win for me!

He's got to take a lesson from Harris, neither is effective when they're not pointed North.

I know exactly the play you're talking about.

Demski certainly has speed and decent hands and has made several great plays this season.  To make full use of his talent, he must do exactly what has been identified above: go north -south, secure the ball.
The big plays are important but so is realizing that there are times when he should settle for a two or three yard gain instead of shooting for the moon and ending up with a loss.
That play where he went wide was a perfect example in that an O-lineman (possibly Neufeld) had a block on a guy and going straight upfield would have easily gained him three yards before the tackle, and if he had broken that tackle possibly a lot more.  Of course it is easy to see that on replay and he has to make a quick decision, but that is what the greats do.

Coming in late.  What a game. Hard fought, and overall I'm excited, this team feels like a winner.

Go Blue!

Aside from Harris, Streveler was the best running back out there tonight for us. Putting him in when we needed to run down the clock was a no brainer. The mans a beast and a punishing runner. Great call to have him run the offense

He's a great change of pace and the threat of him passing will drive DCs nuts. What he does have to improve on is his decision making on the read options. He tends to want to keep the ball when the handoff is the right move. He has to read the defensive end and blocking. A couple of times yesterday he got stuffed trying to go outside when Harris had room and blocking set up, had he been given the ball. He'll learn. Really like this kid.

I'm not making any excuses for Demski, because I know I've yelled at the TV plenty of times for him to run North/South...but I also wonder how frozen the field was, and whether that affected the players' ability to make hard cuts. You would think/hope that SOMEBODY would have advised or coached Demski to run less East/West along the way...

I'm sure he has been told to do just that but that doesn't mean he will do it.  He was good enough to be able to get away with it at U of M and olld habits are hard to break.  He will not likely change his ways till he realizes he cannot consistently get away with it at this level.  Could be a short career if he doesn't learn.

Seen enough of Demski's repertoire. Yes, he's had a couple of games where he's made great plays but those have been offset by costly fumbles and tipped passes into the hands of defenders. Play 43 yesterday saw Demski miss a key block which led to a drive-snuffing 4 yard loss and Harris getting collared by Eguavoen. A nice 7 play drive ended right there on the Riders 24 and we had to settle for a FG.

Empty seats for a playoff game in Regina against their bitter rivals?  Did they know what was coming?  Did the Bridge lower the turnout?

Poop recorded one tackle.  The guy who drank his milkshake got 3.

Riders have thousands of senior citizen season ticket holders...they could literally die being out in that cold.  Over 30,000 sold seats...much less in attendance however.... Riders got their $$

I was in Winnipeg in 2003 when the Riders were in town.  That was a cold game too.  Any guess at what the attendance was?

Turnout was good, considering.  I know what most of us WPG fans are thinking, we are used to seeing Mosaic packed full of greenies each and every time, so we get a bit shocked when there's lots of empty seats.  SSK's penchant for having the best attendance in the CFL backfires here.

Since I was there, I can tell those that riff on attendance that it was cold.  It was bloody cold.  Forget the -10, as sitting in the stands for 4.5 hours it was the windchill (which was definitely -20) that was the killer.  You have to be a die hard fan to sit through that.  I'm a very hardy Winnipegger born and bred, drink slurpees when it's -30C, and eat ice cream, bbq all winter long, take the garbage out in the winter in just my PJs, and fill up the bird feeder with no shoes sometimes.  I wore 5 layers on top including knee-length down parka, 3 on bottom, frankenstein boots, yukon-rated mitts, farmer bob hat, scarf.  And my core still got cold by the end.  And face: man if I didn't bring that scarf I'd have had to leave early.

It's easy to take that for 1 or maybe 2 hours, but the 4.5 hours I was outside all told and I can see why a ton of people stayed home.  I just wish more of them would stubhub their tickets!!  ;)

Everyone who stayed until the end on both sides deserves a massive atta-boy.

The Riders for sure got there money. I found it hilarious during TV time outs the were air blowing the slight dusting of snow off the advertisements on the field but leaving the the rest for the snow to compile on the rest of the field. First of all it did not even need it and second it shows the Riders are more concern about the money than anything.
