Title: NFL 2018-19 season thread
Post by: GOLDMEMBER on September 11, 2018, 02:18:07 AM
What an awesome year to start in week one.

Rodgers heroics in a GB come back win

Tom Brady rolls on up on a Texan D.

Tyreek Hill explosion in an awesome Cheif win

Nice rounded out victory by the Vikings. Entertaining game to watch.

The Bucs with an unreal performance against the Saints. 2 WRs with 145+ yards each! Wow.

Browns blow with a chip shot kick in OT. Big Ben Vulnerable?

Jets look awesome against a sad sack Lions team. I like and respect Todd Bowles.

Gruden and Raiders VS LOADED Rams roster. Should be a hoot.

Please continue and enjoy, I AM.

Khalil Mack looked amazing after signing his massive contract.

James Conner had an amazing day filling in for LeVeon Bell.... will be interesting to see what comes of that situation.  Still premature, but I have already heard trade rumors about Bell if he continues his hold out.

Bills look like they are going to be a mess this year with 0-16 potential.

Adrian Peterson looked like he turned back the hands of time and had an awesome debut for Washington.  I thought his career was over, maybe he still has a bit left in the tank.

I've watched the Thursday Eagles-Falcons game and Sunday Panthers-Cowboys games (Panthers are my team). Both games were god-awful (even though my team won). I'm glad the games you watched were enjoyable!

I watched my first NFL game in over a season, the Packers vs Vikings.
Couple of thoughts.

Are our CFL FG kickers better than the NFL ones?
I think ours are more reliable.

Why didnt the Packers run the ball when the game was in the bag?
Just run the ball and run the clock down. Too cocky?
They seemed to be looking for ways to give the game away.

Maybe a tie was a fair outcome in the end.

So an active Bills player just decides at halftime he has had enough so he retires, puts on street clothes and leaves...

If that had happened in the CFL we would all be hearing about how bush league it was...and don't get me wrong I love both football leagues..

You can not make this statement based on 1 game.  You can lose your job instantly in the NFL because of 1 missed kick.  The multiple field goal misses in OT yesterday were completely out of the ordinary.  NFL kickers are definitely more reliable than CFL kickers.

The Brown's could be 3-0, if they had a kicker. Nice to see a rookie get a chance to prove that he can win.

Definitely.  Also on the flip side, Browns could just as easily be 0-3.  With Mayfield in at QB now though, they definitely look like a new team from the first 2.5 games with Tyrod Taylor.  Will be interesting to see how Mayfield progresses.

I've tried watching some NFL games, like the Vikings/ Bills

and lost interest. Maybe Arizona/Bears? Naw, I won't waste my time.

Rams play in Denver next week, so good chance that they stay undefeated.  Chiefs play in New England next week, which will be a tough game.

How about these facts (referring to the gruesome injury Alex smith had yesterday). From gill Brandt's Twitter:

Some strange similarities between Alex Smith's injury and Joe Thiesmann's 33 years earlier:

>Same date: Nov. 18
>Same score: 23-21
>Same yards/att: 5.0
>Injured leg: Right
>Injuries: Broken tibia, fibula
>Injured on 3rd sack of game
>Both injuries at 40-yard line
>Both at hands of NFL's only 3x DPOY winners (L.T., Watt)

**Romeo Crennel on sideline for both games

KC vs. LAR -> an instant classic.

Its too bad that someone had to lose.  I can't recall any QB ever *losing* a game with 6 td passes.  Poor Mahomes.

But those three INTs are gonna sting.

How about these facts (referring to the gruesome injury Alex smith had yesterday). From gill Brandt's Twitter:

Some strange similarities between Alex Smith's injury and Joe Thiesmann's 33 years earlier:

>Same date: Nov. 18
>Same score: 23-21
>Same yards/att: 5.0
>Injured leg: Right
>Injuries: Broken tibia, fibula
>Injured on 3rd sack of game
>Both injuries at 40-yard line
>Both at hands of NFL's only 3x DPOY winners (L.T., Watt)

**Romeo Crennel on sideline for both games

Washington is gonna have a tough time signing a starting QB in 2051

Kareem Hunt released by Chiefs after the TMZ domestic violence video is released.  I am wondering how other teams will view this.  The video of Ray Rice ended his career, but Hunt is younger and in his prime.... I am wondering if any teams will be calling.

He will play again - but not for a while IMO...

So many questions and so much inconsistency between incidents and players and punishments in the NFL.

Just a mess - these players have to stop this cycle

From rotoworld -

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio considers the Eagles a candidate to claim Kareem Hunt off waivers.
Hunt is facing a lengthy suspension under the Personal Conduct Policy, but his release from the Chiefs was trust-related after he lied to the team back in February. Unlike Ray Rice, Hunt's a cost controlled superstar in the prime of his career that's going to be cleared to play at some point. Signed through 2020, there's upside in stashing Hunt for teams that are willing to take the PR hit. Hunt has Ohio ties and was drafted by Browns GM John Dorsey in Kansas City. Washington, Baltimore, and Tampa are all running back needy teams that could also have interest.

This was a long time in the making.  McCarthy made terrible decisions and used old schemes for far too long.  Should have been fired after last season.  I am actually surprised though that they let him go mid-season.  Packers season is a write-off and I doubt Joe Philbin is going to accomplish anything for the rest of the season.

Rams and/or Saints can be beaten in the playoffs.

Chiefs will be super tough to beat at home in payoffs if they can stay healthy (Ware and Hill)

Must win tonight for the Vikings.

In todays NFL, teams overpay for the "best QB available".  Cousins is by no means deserving of the contract that he got with the Vikings, but they paid it because he was the best available.  Look at guys like Brock Osweiler (when he signed with Houston a few years ago), Jimmy Garoppolo (SF), etc.  None of them deserve that kind of money, but teams will pay top dollar if there are no better options.

How was that NOT a PI with 1:40 left???? It cost the Saints the game. There was an earlier non call for PI on the same Ram DB.

Also thought there was a face mask missed on Goff on the regulation FG drive to tie.

And people complain about refs in the CFL. Refs in the NFL make critical mistakes as well.

Fantastic championship weekend! Two OT games? Neither felt like OT games at half time. Was hoping for Andy Reid but Tom is Tom. Felt bad for the Saints -- tough way to lose after the blown PI call. For all the grief we give the CFL at times, they've got two things right that were glaring yesterday: a proper OT format and PI challenge. Not sure what is a bigger outrage: the fact that Showtime and the Chiefs offense didn't get to play in OT or the fact that the Rams won after one of the worst blown calls in recent memory.

Wow, phantom RTP on Brady, blatant PI on the Rams, both go on to win in OT games that should have ended the other way in regulation.  PI / RTP challenge in the CFL is better.

NFL OT sucks as well... CFL OT is kinda odd, but it makes sense.  Both teams get a chance to win, while the coin flip is an advantage, it is not as big an advantage as in the NFL...

CFL > NFL

I didn't watch either game in it's entirety. However in each game there were obvious missed called, bogus calls and " what the heck " situations.

Not disputing we have similar things happen in the CFL but at least some are corrected via the challenge process.

I'd like to see them go back to 2 challenges instead of one only. Perhaps 3 was too many but it's clear that refs miss calls and I'd rather get it right than save a few minutes of viewing time.

It's not that bad calls were made, it is more when they were made.  Late in games, and in OTF (off the field) situations.  Drive extenders.

I can see pooh poohing a bad call early in the game, but such blatant miscalls when the game is on the line, it is crushing.  The superbowl should be Saints - Chiefs except for officiating.

You can make a case for the Saints being jobbed by the bad call but not the Chiefs - on the INT they were clearly lined up offside.  OT rules and the fact they let the Pats drive the field in OT cost them that game.

This. The OT rules in the NFL are crap but the Chiefs' defense did nothing to stop that opening drive in OT. They lost that game fair and square. Anyone trying to say they got jobbed by the officials didn't watch the game.

That pick play was redonkulous!!! C mon refs , ya got to call the obvious!!! Ridiculous to let them get away with it

This. The OT rules in the NFL are crap but the Chiefs' defense did nothing to stop that opening drive in OT. They lost that game fair and square. Anyone trying to say they got jobbed by the officials didn't watch the game.
It is a conspiracy that is pro Patriots and pro Rams!

Missed or incorrect calls are always a bad thing. In this case it literally cost a Super Bowl appearance. Someone on the crew reffing should be fired.

YOUR FIRED!

From being on the All star playoff crew to being fired. Tough business.

It was so sad, with todays technology and the fact that it was crystal clear to everyone with even half a brain and eye sight, that this was a total foul, yet, it stood. No challenge process, no appeal from the 'command centre', nothing. Just sit back and take that crap call. Unbelieveably dark ages in game administration. No doubt the rules change and allow for the obvious to be called. We in the CFL complain when we have to burn a challenge to challenge the dead obvious...heck, Payton didn't even have that option!! I don't know how he didn't choke out the nearest official. That definitely cost them the game, and that's just sad and so unfair when something like this happens--a team that doesn't deserve to get into the big game, does.

I'm sure there'll be a strong case for coaches' challenges to add in PI for next season.

Pretty boring game.

My word that was the worst Super Bowl I've ever watched.  The worst Grey Cup ever was 5X more exciting than that waste of time.  And they even have 1 extra down, and they still can't move the ball?  Pfffft.

And I usually love D games like that.  But something needs to happen in the 2nd half on O.  Rams were supposed to have this vaunted O and it was their D that kept them in the game and gave them a chance.  Kind of like WPG in '18 WF.  At some point the O has to produce.  I really feel sorry for the Rams D, on the field most of the game, holding the line even while bushed.  (Except that DB on Edelman, who made Roc#4 look like Delvin Breaux.)

I was already primed to hate the game since it was once again the make-me-barf Patriots... but I never expected it to be that horrible.  I'd take the aggravating rigged Falcons SB loss over this snorefest any day.

Can we just once have a SB without NE in it?  And for that matter, a GC without CGY?  Pretty please?  Just think of how exciting a Chiefs/Saints SB would have been!!

Can't wait for the CFL season to start so I can start watching some real football.

P.S. That UR on the Rams early in the game when it would have put Brady at 3st & 20ish was highly annoying and a bit suspect.  Notice the near complete lack of replays (a theme throughout the game).  Even the booth guys were speechless until they made up some nonsense.  Nearly the same hit by the Patriots later in the game was left uncalled.  Glad to know the CFL wouldn't have called that UR... even if Loffler had done it.

While I agree it was a snoozefest, one can appreciate the impressive defensive performances by both teams.

My word, that's a sodium-filled post.

And FTR, the hits were not the same. And neither Nantz nor Romo were left speechless by it or "made up some nonsense" after it occurred.

I enjoyed it. Wasn't what I was expecting but not every SuperBowl is going to be 41-33. Too bad the Rams couldn't move the ball a bit more but you've got to hand it to Belichick. He was the real MVP. I've spent years cheering against Brady, Belichick and the Patriots but you have to bow down to their greatness. They are the best that ever was.

I rarely watch NFL football during the regular season, but usually watch the SB.  Agree on the boring side, it was tough to watch.  That being said, NE was all over Goff for the better part of the game, so good on them for that.

I really can't stand the NFL rules surrounding kicking/punting.  You don't realize how much you actually pay attention to the return game, until there is none.  Might as well just use random number generators to determine the starting LOS after 4th down.

So Zac Taylor is the front runner to be the Bengals new HC...he backed up Kliff Kingsbury (new AZ HC) who backed up Ryan Dinwiddie in the 2007 Grey Cup...And i didn't know this until today that he is Mike Sherman's (Als HC) son in law..

There it is...both of Dinwiddies backups in the 2007 Grey cup are NFL head coaches.  Not a bad progression in 12 years for both of those guys.

Yeah, those passes to Edelman and Gronkowski were pretty lousy, eh. Especially that pass to #87 that set up the go-ahead and ultimately winning TD.

You may want to give credit to the Rams' D, too. They made Brady work for every play. Both defenses were pretty unreal on Sunday.
