It's not that bad, you guys. Really upped their game the last 5 years or so. I used to hate it back in the day though.

I don?t mind Pizza Pizza. I compare it to Dominos as a decent mid-tier pizza.

My favourites are Santa Lucia and Royal Pizza.

Obviously Santa Lucia takes the cake (and Royal is my dad's fav), but you're not going to be ordering that every night unless you have 66 Chev $$$

This is an extremely typical Winnipeg conversation, lol

Fond memories of Santa Lucia from my days in Winnipeg.  Other favourite pizza was Pasquale's (used to be in Osborne Village) and Tubbys (in River Heights area).

My very first restaurant pizza was at Gondola Pizza on Pembina Hwy and Oakenwald not far from my brothers place in Wildwood Park.   Last time I was in the Peg a few years back it was still open.   That was almost 50 years ago which is a long time for any restaurant to stay open.   Are they still any good as I go and visit my brother when I?m in Winnipeg and was thinking of trying it?  The reviews are up and down with some loving it and some not....but reviews are not always reliable I find.

Santa Lucia and Santa Ana are the best in the city. Also a fan of Niakwa.

Little Caesars is the best cheap pizza.

Papa Johns sucks, worst pizza ever IMHO.  It and unfortunately little pizza heaven are the only two joints I have ever been physically sick after, hence I cannot even consider a repeat visit (unlike the pizza I purchased form those shops)

The Boss from Gondola is quite good, some of the Santa Lucia locations are good, others suck.  Surprised at how much I like Vern's T-Rex...  but then again, I'm a meatatarian.  Only problem with Verns is the Rider Green boxes, being a SSK chain.  (spits on the ground in Dog Riveranian mentioning Wullerton style)

Carbone, Van Gogh's... there is lots of good 'za in the peg.

Love the Gondola and Niakwa thin crusts. Can't get anything like that here in Edmonton. It's a "must have" when I am in Winnipeg.

I'm at the age where I try to avoid hangover pizza (AKA anything from big corporate chains).

Okay...back to Henoc.

I also used to enjoy Monticcio's on Osborne (south of the village). I know that the old location is closed, but not sure if they've opened elsewhere. Of course, that was before Henoc's time in Winnipeg.

He is on Osborne near Jubilee. He is a friend of mine, his son is Niko Difonte from the Calgary Dinos.  He is the player that kicked that incredible 60 yard Fg to beat UBC in the playoffs last year.

Best pizza in Winnipeg is made at my home, made from homemade mozzarella, special sauce and fresh dough.   ;D

sounds delizcious.....I also make my own him crust....fresh mozzarella and herbs.....I don?t use tomato sauce per se but rather I use different infused olive oils and roasted red pepper, garlic and sun dried tomatoes....which I liberally coat the crust with....a different twist on an old favourite food.

Only place 66 mentions that's also up here is Papa Johns.  Papa isn't bad if you like doughy crust.  It's run of the mill, like Dominos.  I get Papas when they have the midweek blow-out specials.

For the Pizza Hotline bashers, ya it's the cheapest stuff around, but on the bright side it's the cheapest stuff around.  You can't feed 8-10 people for under $40 anywhere else (4XL 2top!).  Here's a hint: on the thick crust they never cook it enough, so when you get it, stick it in the (toaster) oven at 330 for 4-7 minutes.  The cheese gets super gooey and the crust cooks and heats up and some of the grease goes away.  It's waaay better that way.  Works on leftovers too.

For less people, gotta be Pizzaland, especially if you like dough!  Gondola is still good, they have the best Pepperoni in town, but are oily.  I'll contradict everyone and say Santa sucks, but it could just be my closest location.  BP used to be good but is going downhill a lot and dropped my fave flavor years ago; and like $60 for 2 LG is insane.

Bones was very good for the price.  Like the 90's version of Hotline, but better.  I think there's still 1 left in town?  Talking old... I liked Sabinos back in the day.

My apologizes for have to turn this into a Pizza thread but now living in Calgary I dearly miss the various fantastic Pizza Joints in the Peg. Does anyone know if Niakwa Pizza is still around? We use to love the one Archibald. Is it still there?

My apologizes again but besides the Bombers my fondest memory of the Peg is the food (other than that is where I met my wife way way back when). :)

I thought I?d change the menu up and talk about my ALL TIME favourite burger and fries takeout stand ever....VJs at 170 Main Street.  When I lived in the Peg in the early 70s we used to go there after the bars shut down as it was the only place open after 1AM.   Randy Bachman still goes there and it?s rated 4.5 stars out of 5 if you want a giant sized feast burger and home cut fries and a thick chocolate shake.   I?m amazed it?s still open 50 years later....definitely need to go there next time I?m in the Peg....maybe take in some good live blues then go for a VJ special!

In the 60?s and early 70?s it was the original Juniors. Greatest dog in town, chili sauce, mustard, onions, a spike of dill pickle, and European wiener. All the Greek places had very similar fare, Red Top etc. Today they have gone to normal wienrs😝. Still measure the worth of a bag of fries against JV/Junions. The closest I have found is 5 Guys in Mesa AZ. On a Saturday nite you could sit in your car and watch for the ?ladies of the nite? from the Fort Gary Hotel come over for lunch. Come on Henoc make up your mind!

Personally, I find Santa Lucia's 30" pizza the best deal for playoff parties, which I expect we'll see if Muamba signs.  The only problem is getting a 32" pizza box through a 30" door frame, or into the back of a 2 door hatchback.

I was in Winnipeg my first time (I am from Dallas Tex - SMU Grad). A frat buddy of mine actually moved to Winnipeg to start his business up and after I was mustered out of the Army (Yes I did Vietnam before I came to Canada) - he invited me up just to visit. He took his date and a blind date for me (who by the way turns out to be my wife of 47 years in Sept) to Juniors on Main street (I think it was on main street - by the CN rail station). Had my first Juniors and fries - Never looked back! My all time favorite (that and the original Half Moon in Lock port).

Great Memories! Living now in Calgary have never found anything close to Juniors!

While I agree that Calgary lacks non chain burger joints for the most part, Peter's (in Calgary, the Red Deer one is not so hot) does a pretty good job.

To offset that void, there's always Tubby Dog.  Amazing hot dogs and vintage arcade games.

Then there's Big Sky BBQ Pit in Okotoks.  Meat heaven.  Puts Big Ts to shame, and I love Big Ts.

I have had it - To me that?s not even pizza - it?s a sort of an open face sandwich in a crust.   One piece is enough.

We were in Chicago a few summers ago and while it tasted really good the deep dish pizza there was more of a pizza casserole to me than a true pizza.  If you have to use a fork and knife it is not what I consider pizza.

No doubt it was really good though.

Yup... its meaty all right.  When a slice weighs 1.5 lbs... wow.

The issue is that it is like a deli style sandwhich, you don't really get a full pizza bake on the interior, no crispy meat with bubbling fat...  but it is delicious, and well worth the try.  Not sure if they still have the challenge on eating a whole pie in one sitting...

Shoulda tried a few other places.... lots of good deep dish that does not require fork and knife.

First piece was knife and fork at most places then when it cooled it could be picked up. I am big fan of thin crust

I have.  No anchovies... :(

There are other good options there though and I do really like that style of crust. Carbone is good and they have the delisicous salty little fishes I like so much!

If you ever want to order a pizza that no one (except me) will steal a piece of...

Pepperoni, Pineapple and Anchovy...  most people hate either the pineapple or the anchovy..

For a in crust, Gondola is pretty darned good, and the Boss is quite tasty.  Van Gogh is much the same, both are real greasy because they use full fat cheeses...

Gotta put my two cents here cause I've eat a lot of pizza in my day.

Dal's would be my pick for pizza int he city bit expensive tho, I haven't had Santa Ana but I have heard its really good.

Pizza Heaven is up there as well but I found it a bit too greasy.

Santa Lucia is good but overpriced.

Gondola's thin crust is good, not a fan of their other crusts tho.

Verns is probably the most disgusting pizza you could order here it truly is an abomination.

How there are so many Pizza Pizza locations is beyond me I thought it was pure **** as well.

Pizza hotline is meh you get what you pay for first slice or two is decent but goes downhill real quick.

All the other chains are just ok, wasn't a huge Papa Johns fan either.

As for Burgers, a place that opened up in the summer called the Tipsy Cow is the best I've had in the city.  It's located on Portage and Smith close to the MTS Centre.

I remember in the 90s McDonalds used to make pizza.  They were pretty good for the price.  I researched as to why they stopped making them, and McDonalds said that they sold well, but they werent making enough profit on them to justify selling them.

I went there one time and it was a horrible experience.  Sat on the roof patio and they must have had a wasps nest located somewhere cause there was a ton of them buzzing around.  They took forever to serve me my burger and it wasn't even the one I ordered.  Finally got the right one and felt pretty underwhelmed from it.  I also tried their poutine and it was way too salty, and I generally like salty food as well.

This was a few years ago so maybe they've gotten better but I told myself I would never go back.

I have been there two or three times and was pretty much underwhelmed as well...found the burger to be very dry...while not as nice inside and trendy just walk a few hundred steps and go to Daly Burger and have a much better burger and fries.

Haha yeah I remember that as a kid as well, I was also they dick that ordered and made everyone wait well it cooked.  I thought they stopped selling them because the wait times were like 10-15 mins and McDonalds felt it slowed down the kitchen and didn't follow their standard of fast food.

I've had true Chicago deep dish when I visited Chicago a few years back. Seriously, nothing compares.

However, I lived fairly close to Chicken Delight growing up an I can still remember how their pizza tastes. I've had some real grease monsters in my day, but some of the best pizzas I've had have been baked in stove ovens.

Blondie's burgers will give you the best bang for your buck. Expensive like another poster said, but you get a lot. A&W's and Harvey's are probably the better tasting food chain burgers. VJ's and Five Guys taste the same to me.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned where to find the best wings in town? My vote is for Tony Roma's, but I'm comparing that against Smitty's. I'll give chicken delight the nod for their Cajun wings.

Yes their burgers are a little dry, but that because they use very healthy meat. Less fat = dry.

Jeffrey's is my fav for wings if you like them doused in sauce (almost to a fault). One of my new favourites is State & Main in KP. The wings are good with some unique flavours, and they have a Sunday wing night which is a bit more rare (Pony Corral does too and theirs are pretty decent as well.

When I lived in the States, nothing beat Buffalo Wild Wings. For Canadians wanting this experience, the closest thing is Tavern United. They almost literally copied the menu style and upped their game big time with the flavours available. Shout out to Raspberry Chipotle- my god. They're especially good if you like a good amount of breading, making the wings rather large.

I don't get the big deal with Smitty's. They are fine, but for the hype there is surrounding them, there are better places out there.

Little Bones in my opinion are the best int he city, they are meaty and the breading is phenomenal or you can get them naked as well.  They have a ton of unique flavors some of my personal favorite are: Form the Bayou, Chili Maple, Mistress (honey dill and honey garlic combination), Creamy Thai, and Smokey Ranch.

The place started up as a food truck, used to be parked on broadway for lunch hours and at various events across the city and has since grown to a location in Transcona.  The location is a dive since its in the basement of the Royal George and to be honest sometimes the service is a bit slow, but honestly best wings I have ever had and cannot recommend enough.  Below is their menu if anyone is interested in checking out some of the flavors:

Agreed. Smitty's used to be good and inexpensive years ago but there are much better options.

As bluengold204 mentioned, Little Bones is excellent. So many flavours.

Silver Heights Restaurant has really good wings but I haven't been there in some time, so I'm not sure if that's still case.

Yes their burgers are a little dry, but that because they use very healthy meat. Less fat = dry.

Not always - I have made burgers with extra lean ground chicken, with only 4 percent fat, and they are very juicy - the key is to just add extra water to the ground meat, and also make sure to not overcook.  Any added sauces can help keep them juicy and moist as well, ie. worcestershire sauce, bbq sauce, etc.

Right on kill it with tasty sauces. That will fix your dry burger!

Random story.  I once entered a chicken wing eating contest at Hooters back in the late 90s when I was there with a few of my football buddies.  It was hosted by Power 97.  The winner was whoever could eat the most wings in 97 seconds.  I actually ended up winning initially, but the "judges" decided that I did not eat enough meat off the wings, so they gave the win to someone else  :D :D

What a great story. I myself am a SEC grad,  and somedays I miss the South (especially today).

For fried chicken, has anyone else tried JollyBee?  Talk about crunch...  tried it once, will have to give it a second try.  As well as their other weird items popular in the Phillipines.

Candy's Fried Chicken is a fav, luckily they are on the other side of town. ;)

Mitzi's is definitely good.

I have been to both Jollybee locations and I found that the one on McPhillips was better - it may have just been the time of day, but the McPhillips location seemed fresher.

There is also that new Mary Browns chicken that I have heard lots about, but havent tried it yet - its supposed to be good.

Winnipeg is also supposed to be getting its first Popeyes Chicken.  I have tried Popeyes in several US cities, and did not think it was anything special.  I also am not big on chain restaurants.

Mitzi's!! How could I forget!

Re: burgers - Dry burgers are normally the product of staying too long on the grill. But I find choice of beef goes a long way as well.  If anyone finds their way into Kanata/ Ottawa area, I highly recommend checking out Central Bierhaus. The Alberta Angus is probably the best burger I've ever tasted. Tons of international beers on tap as well.

Chicken wings - Smitty's is super cheap but you're getting what you pay for. I'll have to check out Jeffery's the next time I'm home.

Ribs - I'd have to say for consistency sake, my vote is for Tony Roma's. Although Boston Pizza has surprised me with their ribs

Poutine - NY Fries. Smokies poutine.

Pulled pork - Danny's Whole hog hands down. He sets up a food truck in the summer in St Norbert's farmer's market. There's some other great food trucks there, too.

Once the old owner and cook passed away his kids started to change things. They lost a ton of biz.

Oh well...I'm still alive.  I used to eat all the time at the Foody Goody by Polo Park and they were shut down for health violations multiple times and I'm still here  :D

Funny story about foody goody.......  a buddy of mine went on a double date with these girls we met. They wanted to go there so we did..... well these girls brought these big arse purses. We sorta wondered why they had these huge purses. Well they started getting these huge plates of food and we are wondering what these gurls are doing.   LOL   they had zip lock baggies and were dumping food in them to take home.

I believe at the time on a Friday night it was 11.99 all you can eat.  haha

If you're worried about possible health violations you should be losing sleep about half the restaurants in town....and unfortunately especially the busy ones and anyone in an older building. The busier the kitchen, the harder proper food handling practices are to maintain. Lots of cross contamination. Hamburger and chicken are the biggest ecoli sponges and spreaders there are...I order neither from any restaurant unless i know it was cooked from frozen or the restaurant is not busy.

Thunder Bay has a requirement that you post your current rating as assessed by their health department.  An amazingly easy way to ensure maximum effectiveness in your inspection services, and excellent compliance.

People think twice about eating at a place that does not have a big "A" posted.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/thunder-bay-restaurant-scorecards-1.3945295

We definitely should have this here...  it's one thing to have crappy hygiene when no one can see it, its quite another to actually have to declare to the world that you barely pass inspection...

Red Top is also one of my favourites; great burgers, fries and chicken.  The owners son and husband recently passed away so I believe the wife/mother is doing it on her own now.

If you are looking for a buffet in Winnipeg I would suggest Ye's Buffet.  Better than all other Winnipeg buffets.  The location in Brandon is much better though, I would recommended checking it out if you are ever in Brandon.

Ye's (or Yes as one of my friends is convinced it is named) is big, and does have some items that are good, much is Foody Goody quality as well... and it is pricey.

Not a big fan of buffet sushi, kinda scary really, still don't understand why they added it to the Royal Fork.  Still a solid go-to for buffet, good chicken, some pretty solid soup offerings, and something for everyone.

Personally I think Royal Fork could attract a whole lot of new customers if they invested in reinventing themselves.  I used to eat there with my parents in the 1990s, and to this day they still have the exact same booths, carpet, tables, etc.  Walking into that restaurant is almost like a time warp.

I went there once. Was shocked at how much the bill was.

Never again. There are much cheaper out there and it's not like the quality was any different.

OK, so I took my wife to Dals for lunch today, we had the 4pc Chicken and the 2 topping Pizza special...

I guess I had set my expectations too high.  Chicken was good, but no better than Candy's or even Clubhouse.

The pizza was not my preference, using a cracker type crust like Archies rather than a rising dough crust.  Toppings were fine, light on the sauce which my wife prefers, but she only had one piece, even though I ordered her favourite.

Fries were undercooked frozen m'eh, coleslaw my wife liked, but the soggy pickle and grape tomato garnish looked like it had been used a couple times before.

Service was pretty good, and food came out quick.

Not the worst restaurant I've been to, but I don't think I'd repeat.

Anyone had Brazen Hall? Absolutely love their beer, and the won burger week. I recommend going on a Saturday for lunch- special price on half pints of their beer, and $5 off their winning burger platter. You can double the meat for an extra $5 too, and it's totally worth it!

They've really revamped the marketplace. We went there on sunday afternoon and the place was packed. People just chillin's and having a pint, and this sweet lil' pizza spot called red ember where they make the pizza right in front of you.

I will be back. Soon.

Pizzaland on portage is pretty consistant zah. Not the greatest but for the price i think its pretty good.

Maybe you have to find out sho's working when things are a "hit", and only orcder when they are working.  Maybe even tell the owner about your "misses", so he can address the issue.  He may not know just how bad it is.  When a customer gets disappointed by the product, that does not show up the night of the disappointment, but later when the next call does not come.  And before you know it, nobody is calling anymore, and you don't know why.

If you like the place, and the owner, let them know why you are not ordering.  If they are smart, they will address it, maybe even give you a discount to try them again...

Why thank you.  I am always interested in feedback, and where we can implement things to make customers happy, we definitely do.  Love talking dog bones, a topic with controversy and a lot of mis-information and half truths out there.  Some vets say never give a dog a bone, they can cause fractured teeth.  Well, if your dog is going to fracture a tooth, its because there is something else wrong, and it'd crack it anyways.  I've had 2 dogs fracture teeth on kibble...  and did you know chicken bones are safe for dogs, until they are cooked.  Cooking hardens them, making them fracture into sharp little knife blades and it also reduces digestibility , so they slice and dice though the gut.  The only danger with raw bones is the same as with anything your pet eats, if they gulp too large a piece, it can be a choking hazard.

As long as it is done in a courteous and diplomatic way, concerns should be met with appreciation.  Like getting your side greek salads each with a single Kalamata olive.  Better than getting it with sliced black olives (blasphemy), but just one?  Mention it to the owner (sitting at the owners table), and out comes a dish of olives, and next time we visit, a 300% increase in olives in our salads.  ;)

Never seen a dog that would let a piece of chicken last more than a few minutes...  and with any raw meat treat, we always recommend either sequestering the animal (in a kennel for instance, or outside) or training them to eat the treat in a certain place, my preference is a washable bathmat.  Give them the item on the bathmat, and if they take it off the mat, you take it away.  They learn real quick to stay on the mat, and that when the mat comes out, they are getting a treat!!!!

Dal's is usually pretty good, but I wouldn't go for lunch. It's right in the realm of the CN campus and it's the spot everybody there recommends to all the out of towners who don't want the awful cafeteria food. Way too busy to be consistent. For dinner, it's awesome.

I always like Five Guys burgers, to be honest. Only fast food place I'll trust for a burger.

Pizza wise, I like trash pizza and I know it. I'll always order Pizza Hotline or Domino's, but my girlfriend finally got me on board with trying Gondola and while I didn't think it was amazing, it was bar none the best leftover reheated pizza I'd ever had the next day.

Mitzi's for chicken fingers is a 100% good choice, I don't get the hype of Candy's Chicken.

yeah but when you can order a XL on mondays for $7, I don't really care if there's a bit too much crust. Toss it aside and keep munching. I would say that I don't think their cheese is too thin, I find the one by more place puts plenty on.

Secret to great nachos is stewed tomatoes. layer the chips with drained and diced stewed tomatoes. cheddar / Monterrey Jack / mozz shrredded cheese mix, taco meat and some chopped green onions and jalapenos on top, yum.

Another good option for nachos is Famous Daves.  They have some pretty non traditional toppings which adds a kick.  Last time I ordered them they came with chili, lettuce, tomatoes, beans, sour cream, cheese and your choice of chicken, pork or beef.

Agreed on Carlos & Murphy's.

How much were the nachos at Famous Dave's?

I wonder how Juniors is these days.  I used to go there a lot when I was younger but havent been in a long time.  I think there are still a few locations around the city - St Marys, McPhillips and I think the Portage location is still there.

Red Top also makes some good burgers.

Nuburger has some unique burgers.  They have recently expanded and I think they have 3 locations now.

Also, cant go wrong with a nip from Sals.

Juniors is still very good. I go to the St Mary?s location a few times a year and the Fat Boy with fries is still amazing. But I?d say George?s on St Mary?s make a better burger. I?m not a fan of Sals anymore...their burgers are mostly bun...patties have gotten smaller. And still a huge fan of Red Top...they?re up there with George?s for best burger imo, and they make amazing chicken too.

Baraka on Main Street has some great shawarma.

Lol everyone says it is great, but I am just about the only person that has gone there and wasn't impressed.  I have given it three tries and each time I find their meat to be super dry and lacking of sauce.

I have been there countless times and every time I find that the chicken, beef and lamb are always super juicy and tender.

I like the platters that come with rice, tabouleh, etc. a lot better than I like the wraps.

529 Wellington - steaks and Prime Rib are some of if not the best in the City...pricey though

Keg - very good Prime Rib

Rae and Jerry's - very good Prime Rib - love their horseradish (and that is one of the best parts of Prime Rib IMO)

I am sure there are others...

Prime rib is so hit and miss.  If you get there at the perfect moment, when the meat has cooked and rested the exact perfect amount, then it is absolutely scrumptious.  Half hour either side, and its tough and flavourless...  its not like a steak that you cook each portion to order, so timing is not an issue.  Getting the right piece, at the right level of doneness for your taste, its rare (or medium rare).

Anybody ever eat at the Marion Street Eatery....?

Been there dozens of times. It's excellent. I have never been for breakfast/brunch but I've heard nothing but good. Dishes I'd recommend are the steak bites, the onion soup, the bison chili, the stuffed meatloaf, the chicken pot pie, and the Cuban sandwich. They also make a mean Caesar.

 ;D

529 Wellington - steaks and Prime Rib are some of if not the best in the City...pricey though

Rae and Jerry's gets my vote. The Round Table is no longer around but the prime rib there was really good (the horseradish and the Yorkshire pudding were outstanding). I haven't been but I've heard good things about the prime rib at The Met and at Bailey's.

Surprised that no one has brought up the topic of the best "sushi" yet.  Seems to be what everyone is eating nowadays.

Since Edo Hei shut down back in 2012, the only places I've enjoyed for sushi are Asoyama, Edoichi, and Yuu Izakaya (also pretty good ramen there). Edo Hei was hands down the best by far, though. Ono-san's talents were (and I'm sure still are) second to none.

Ugh, I miss it so much. :'(

I know that place and have eaten there a few times. It's very good but can get awfully expensive - the tuna carpaccio is deadly.

I find it's more fusion cuisine than authentic (or traditional) Japanese, though.

Should be...it's the same recipe.

Same recipe how ?.....the sauce recipe ?....even if the sauces from the pizza places was originally created by the same person, they no longer taste exactly the same. Plus the toppings are slightly different giving the two pizza places their own distinct pizza experience....

.....but this is all irrelevant to me right now, right now I am getting ready to go find the Marion Eatery for some supper......and to keep trying to think what pizza place I will be trying while I am in the city 😃

I went to Red Top last night.  Their burgers are still amazing and the portions are HUGE...I took half of it home for lunch today.  They have a new "healthy" burger in honour of their son who recently passed away...it's two burger patties, an egg, with two pieces of lettuce as the buns.  I didn't try it, but it looked interesting.

The owner of Tom's and Bobby, the owner of Santa Maria's were business partners for many years and opened up Santa Maria's together. Tom and Bobby had a falling out and Tom opened up a Greek restaurant that he ran for many years before he built the current Tom's and gave up the Greek fare.
Tom and Bobby use the same recipe for the sauce and it's possible that they source toppings differently now....but the crust and sauce are the same. At Santa Maria's they just put a light brushing of garlic butter on the crust prior to adding the sauce. They build there pizzas in the same manner otherwise with the same huge amounts of toppings.
I give the nod to Santa Maria...but Tom's is pretty much it's equal. Both, I would dare say, are better than anything I have ever tried in Winnipeg.
A lot of people in Thompson's preference for Tom's is partly because Santa Maria is such a dive imo. Both have great pizza.

Title: Re: Pizza. Burgers and other Culinary Delights!
Post by: NorthernSkunk on March 28, 2018, 06:17:36 PM
One reason more people opt for Toms when ordering is because they are more consistent when making their pizzas.....Santa Maria can be known for burning a few pizzas and sometime just not making them like they did back in the day.

We had a Santa Maria combination Monday night when we got home from Winnipeg lol. We got a decent pizza...

I ordered a pizza from Gondola last week and i have to say it was not very good. Worst pizza ive ever had from them. Ive got a lot of greesy pizzas from them over the years but they are still pretty good. Even when its greesy when you get it.... the next day leftovers are really good.

New Popeyes Chicken is opening this week in Seasons of Tuxedo.  Wonder how it will compare to the ones in the US.  So far the American chains coming to Winnipeg have been pretty weak compared to in the US.  The IHOP here is horrible compared to the US restaurants, and the Famous Daves is pretty bad as well compared to the ones in the US.

Haven't been to IHOP yet, but Famous Dave's is just meh. Went a couple times within the first year of opening by haven't been back since.

Qdoba is pretty solid in terms of "new to Canada" American chains. I'd prefer Chipotle, but the concept is pretty much the same.

I have found portions are always bigger in the US restaurants...cheaper prices....in Canada service is better, restaurants are cleaner

Quality of the food is usually pretty close.

Just my observations

Mary Browns just opened a new location near my house so I tried it out and thought it was pretty good. No way in hell would I line up in a 2 hour line for it though. Those people waiting at popeye's are just nuts...

Been waiting almost my whole life to try Popeyes (stupid American commercials). Ironically, I tried it for the first time in Edmonton a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't impressed at all and am not going to wait in line to try it again.

On a more positive note, tried Nuburger for the first time at their location at the Forks - pretty much the best burger I ever had. To top it off, you get to order a beer at the forks now too. If it wasn't so busy there these days, I'd be there every week.

I went to the new Nurburger at the crossroads shopping thingy and it was awesome as well. I had the chicken cheddar burger with yam fries and it all was awesome.

Lol whenever i go to Nuburger I always order the Blue and Gold burger for obvious reasons and don't really care for it.  Not sure why I don't try anything else there.

Also yes the commons at the forks is pretty cool they got a good selection of beers.  I love going there skating the rivers in the winter and catching a beer after, but like you said sometimes its just too busy there.
