I had no idea Lirim was a pending F.A., still one of the best kickers in the league and a good pick up for any team that doesn't employ Medlock.

There are several team that would be upgraded by signing Lirim. I think he will get his payday.

I can see Montreal as the 1st team to make a big splash in free agency. They should be in a massive re-build mode. Need to go younger in many areas. I envision seeing a big overhaul of their current veterans. Free agency is the start of that for them IMO.

A CFL agent told Herb Z that Montreal will need to overpay to get players to sign there.

I would imagine Montreal will be willing to overpay. All teams are kind of forced to at the beginning of a rebuild. Hell....we had to give Nick Moore 180k to come here. lol

Expect some action from the #Redblacks in first day of #CFL free agency. It looks like Zack Evans will become a free agent, Ottawa could go with an international on DL, AC Leonard makes sense. Also think they will be in on DB Mitchell White.

I don't think so. I think everyone understands pretty clearly that Montreal will have to pay a premium, that others don't, to get their man.

Agent: "He Kyle we think that Westerman signing in Montreal for 230k a season means that Ted Laurent should get paid 260k"

Walters: " Well tell Ted we wish him the best of luck in Montreal then."

Agent: " but he wants to sign with you guys"

Walters: Let's talk signing in Winnipeg numbers then shall we....

I think we'll see a lot of F.A.'s dip there toe into the marketplace and return to their original clubs with a small increase over original offers.  Hoping that's what happens with Westerman and Thomas.

I will guess it is a reference with Sask being a flat province, but Blue and Gold 84 would have to answer that questions. I myself refer to Sask fans as "Gappers". It refers to that gap between Manitoba and Alberta. Troy Westwood (former Bomber place kicker) referred to them as "Banjo pickin inbreds", this is how the banjo bowl got its name.

None of our own free agents have signed elsewhere. Considering two were high in the top 30 that's interesting. However, money is being spent around the league by each team. Roster spots are being filled.

He cracked 1,000 yards last season. He's an instant upgrade to the Riders on offense. What I wonder is what he signed for in Jonestown.

I seem to recall the last third of the season he didn't do much...big body gets beat down and that won't be getting any different as he gets older.  You are right though he improves the riders but they were starting pretty low bar.

Weird, do they have any semblance of a strategy they're pursuing?  They already have 3 good Import RB's in Marshal, Richardson and Thigpen that they probably won't be able to keep, now they add a Natl. starter to the mix?  Too much money and not enough brains.

Riders do manipulate the 6 game IR, which does give them impressive depth.  Last year they had close to 30 players on the 6 game IR.

I can see releasing Owens and Marshall. Richardson played pretty well though and Messam can't handle the full load for the full season.

Solid replacement for Watson.

Hardly. Watson had 350 yards of which 250 yards more or less in YAC. Kohlert had 77 yards in receptions with 9 yards YAC.

Watson is leaps and bounds better than Kohlert.

What's the snap and target comparison between the two?  That might explain the statistical difference, since opportunity typically = stats.

Well that's the point. Watson will get more targets because he's proven to be a more productive receiver. That's what defines " better ". He's probably faster, tougher and more likely to break tackles than Kohlert.

Watson: 115 games 290 receptions 3331 yards
Kohlert: 100 games 167 receptions 1990 yards. Only 7 receptions in 2017.

That's a bit of a simplified way of looking at things. Maybe Kohlert had a better receiver in front of him on the depth chart in Calgary, where Watson has less competition for targets in front of him on the depth chart.  Put Watson on Calgary and maybe he doesn't get as many targets as he got in Edmonton.  Stats don't always tell the whole story.

I do agree that Watson is probably the better receiver, but your argument of showing both of their stats from last season doesn't tell the whole story.

I gave the career stats. Watson was always a more productive receiver during his career where ever he played. Obviously Kohlert was way down the depth chart in Calgary with the talent they had with import receivers.

Even when Kohert was with the Bombers he got pushed by JFG who then got pushed by Coates.

If Rory has returned to form he has better hands than Watson and is a great possession receiver but other than that Watson is superior.

Historically, there is no doubt Watson has been a more productive receiver.  However, both of them are in the twilight of their career, and past productivity isn't always the final proof.

When I look at the Lions roster, it seems to me that they are looking to go with 2 NI receivers.  And I think Hervey will want his coach to use Watson like they did in Edmonton, coming in to help with pass protection as a TE, as much as anything else.  I think that will get him on the field more than Rory, who is probably isn't seen as much more than injury insurance at this point. So, I think Watson is going to get more snaps, and will play a larger role.

I think it is safe to say that the Riders effectively swapped NAT defenders HM for ZE. However, since 35k of HMs salary was paid ZE effectively costs them 35k more. That means the cost of rostering ZE pushes up to 205000. That means they have 3 DL constituting 555k of cap hit.

I am waiting for a Chris Jones presser in the next couple days where he rips off a rubber mask revealing Brendan Taman while exclaiming..." Im baaack!"

Read what I actually posted instead of arguing pointlessly. Kohlert can be a dependable/reliable NAT receiver when used effectively. Hence my saying "solid replacement."

It isn't like the Eskimos' offense relies heavily on NAT receivers, anyway.

I read what you posted and I disagree.  Watson had a 113 receptions in the 3 years in Edmonton. That's a little more reliance than you suggest.

I didn't suggest anything, actually. I simply stated he's a solid (reliable/dependable) replacement at NAT receiver.

FWIW, in Kohlert's most recent 3 years with the Bombers, he had 105 receptions. Last season was an aberration.

That's a lot of dough. Maybe one is a surprise cut, who knows. One thing though, although it's an expensive defensive line it's also a good defensive line. The key to beating the Riders this year is going to be to neutralize the rush. The good news is our offense will be well suited to do so. If teams can scheme them out, a good chunk of their SMS is going to be rendered ineffective.

I will preface this by saying I don't think we'll sign him, nor do I want us to. But, I believe that incident was back in 2005 and he's been to several domestic violence training programs since. I also don't think he's ever been connected with doing something like that again. He's now married (to a different woman) and by all accounts in a healthier long-lasting relationship. They got married at the stadium in Montreal after a 5-year courtship (media picked it up if anyone is curious you can google).

Last year, he announced he is donating his brain to CTE research upon his death. He says he'd suffered blurred vision after a football hit '50 times' in his career. He's been knocked out cold 'at least twice'. He also fears he has CTE and says he has memory issues. He's 37-years-old and has played football most of his life. I don't mean for this to come across as an excuse for prior behavior but if you're going to bring up the incident, it should be presented fairly I think. By all accounts, he seems to have used that incident in 2005 as a way to better himself and I think he deserves the benefit of all the facts.

One year is all he'll get in Mtl., after that if he wants to continue his football career he'll have to play for substantially less.

One year contracts is a way of life in the current CFL. If he got the reportedly extra $50K for this season that's a pretty good deal. 2019 will see a new CBA and who knows what that will bring.

So far 43 players have changed teams. This doesn't include those that weren't on the free agent list and released at the end of the season etc. etc.

So, even with offering Jake Harty a considerable contract, and it leaking that he was going to MTL, Reed lets him slip through his fingers to Jones.  Frying pan, meet fire...  well, at least in SSK he has a guy that used to be a QB tossing him the ball...

Of all the signings, Van G is probably the only guy who feels safe in his decision.  He's played 2 yeas under Jones, so he knows dumpster fires, and he's not in a spot where he's asked to do anything other than kick de ball. So, as long as he can put it through the uprights...

Kyle Knox was a good player but he got beat out by other rookies we had on our team, I don't think it is an overly big deal that we are losing Knox.  Although he will help  Montreal improve, and I think that is also a good thing.

No.  He was a MLB recruit, but Hurl started ahead of him due to ratio.  He played as a DI lineback, but as the year went on he lost playing time to Santos-Knox.

John Hodge calls him very athletic, but not a great football IQ.  He didn't stand out, but he was serviceable.  He might find a role with the Als, but the Bombers won't miss him.

Knox was coming off his first contract so he would have been looking for a bit of a raise. I'm sure Walters feels that money should be spent elsewhere and that rookie linebacker can replace him in the line-up.

Knox was a lousy every down linebacker.
He couldn't tackle, over ran the hole and was basically a non factor, with many missed tackles.
He was very good at pursuit from the backside and tackling a runner after 8 yd gains.  Not really what you want from a starter.

Very good special teamer though.

You have obviously not watched any SK football games from last year. Muamba was an excellent player making plays all over the field. Tons of speed, solid tackler, usually in good position, etc.

Hmmm. Now it looks like Ottawa, Montreal and Winnipeg will be the ones left looking at Muamba.

Since Ottawa hasn't re-signed Jones and now lost Reed, I'm thinking Muamba lands in Ottawa. Possibly Winnipeg but I'd rank Ottawa, Winnipeg and Montreal in that order.

That could be meaningful or not. IIRC we had Wilson on the PR at the end of 2016 and brought him back on the PR in 2017. So he'll really need to step up since it would seem impractical to have a guy on the PR for part of 3 seasons.

I think I've read they are high on Jones so he could possibly be a DI if we have a LB as a DI or he could be the PR guy in 2017.

This is what Walters said in his initial availability. This is becoming more and more likely with the othe MLB candidates signing in Toronto today. So unless we land Muamba, we?re starting JSK and Wild, with Jones and Wilson competing to be Wild?s back up for when he?s inevitably injured.

Walters and O'Shea also liked Hurl. What else would we expect them to say. They may make the roster, PR or be among the 1st players cut. Very likely we add some rookie LB's. Whether anyone sticks is a who knows question.

How is Thomas Miles getting no love here?  He has the right passport, has starting experience, and is a local boy and is on our roster!  Yeesh...

CFL CAREER ? 2014 to 2017:

Joined the Bombers in 2017 as a free agent after spending his first 3 CFL years with Toronto. Has 40 CFL games of experience to his credit along with another in the 2015 playoffs. The 2015 season was his best as he accumulated 50 defensive tackles while making 7 late season starts. Comes into 2017 with 79 career tackles.

We had some other ratio choices in 2017 than Hurl at MLB. I didn't like any of them but MLB is a more critical role than some of the other possibilities.

Keep in mind O'Shea was always pumping the tires of Hurl when he was originally signed in 2015.

Well, currently they have Ball, Bass, Herdman, Jordan, Onyeka, Plummer, Woods, and Reed on the roster.  Asking Woods or Reed to play out of position at the expense of either Ball or Bass seems like a waste.  Package up Herdman + (Woods or Reed) to a team that needs some Canadian developmental talent + MLB for an import receiver might be an option.  Could see the Riders having to move a receiver (they've moved a high cost OL and MLB, receiver would be the next position) if they are not sold on their options at LB, Holley would seem like a lower cost trade if they still have the room, Roosevelt if they are truly in cap hell.

Alternatively, they're fighting for the position in TC.  Don't see why either one of them would knowingly sign on for that, when they'd be pretty much guaranteed (short of injury) a starting gig on three other rosters.

The point is that he has still seen more defensive reps than Miles. Usually in a 34 combination but with Wild and JSK considered as both WIL and MLB's, then Briggs could go in at WIL if there was an injury.

Can't honestly remember anytime in 2017 where Miles saw defensive reps?

I'd still be more comfortable with that than Miles seeing defensive reps.

Hurl often came out on 2nd down passing situations. K.Knox. Santos Knox, Wild and Briggs saw time in 34 fronts. In those situations we also saw Corney come in with a 3 DE DL to sustain the ratio.

Yes I know Hurl often came out on 2nd down. I just can?t see Briggs being able to handle starting at MLB for an extended period of time...he?s just too small. Briggs being in on second down for passing downs makes sense to me. Miles I can see at MLB, and he?s done it. Walters even mentioned Miles as an option at MLB during one of his recent interviews.

With your logic, Remple gives us WR experience. Oh yeah, and Flanders gives us REC experience. I understand that sure, them getting playing time can count as experience. But I think me, gbill and everyone else calling for experience want guys who have e consistently started. Not just a 7 game span or on 3rd downs every other series

Losing ANY starting player for an extended period of time is problematic.  See Leggett / Westerman / Nichols / Adams last year...  but you do the best you can with the roster you make.  Today's roster is much better suited to replace any of the players I mentioned.  Fenner >  Fogg at SAM,  Westerman's loss was a ratio clusterfudge, Durant > Feve/Davis, Bowman > Denmark...

Miles and Briggs are solid players, and while they aren't Wild or JSK, they will not be out of place if they are needed to start.  And, if they do start, we get 4 Int WR... which makes us better on O...

Remple is a specialist who, in an extreme pinch could line up at WR and run a route.  Not the same thing as Miles having 7 MLB starts under his belt.

How do you propose backing up every position with a veteran player who has consistently started at that position?  If they are a starter, then they are on a roster as a starter, getting starter pay.  Otherwise, if they are a vet, they are no longer a starter and winding down as a backup, or a young player earning their way to starting.  Having a team with 2 experienced starting players at each starting position is insane.  You can have a few of those (Durant, Roh, Fogg, Neufeld last year), but more than that is just a pipe dream.

I'm proposing bring a guy into camp to compete for a spot. If he earns one, great. If not, see ya later.

You have obviously not watched any SK football games from last year. Muamba was an excellent player making plays all over the field. Tons of speed, solid tackler, usually in good position, etc.

Buckzumhoff = Joe Mack's secret BB forum handle?

I watched a lot of football. I even watched him play for Indy on third down conversions where they used him sparingly. He didn't win top defensive player award on his own team. Hes a Canadian and Sask is trying to let him go. Hey if you can get him for about 140 -150 then maybe. Otherwise Id look into why Saskatchewan is letting him go, I think he was outplayed by the other linebackers Sask has.

Well I suppose on how you look at it. He's the best or 2nd best at the role he provides in the kicking game as LS.

LS is a critical role. So I wouldn't really hesitate to consider his specialist role as a top Canadian.

Not talking starter, people were commenting that we have nothing behind JSK, no one with experience...

Miles has experience, and has the right passport to be a backup, not using up a DI spot, and is a special teams demon... I have no issues with depth at LB...

Not what they were saying at all, and they even explained that to you over a page of posts. The debate was whether or not Miles is a starting calibre MLBer, not whether he is experienced. For some reason you think they are the same thing.

I wouldn't. LS is like kicker, extremely important but not one that will ever get the player consideration as a top NAT.

I just don't view it as a "top Canadian" position because the differential between long snappers isnt too far, at least to us fans or anyone who isnt a kicker, punter or holder

A couple of snaps over the punters head might have you thinking differently. One mistake on a FG attempt, convert attempt can cost you a game.

Anyway, I understand both points of view. Not a big deal or argument.

If you say that Rempel is the best NAT in the league at his position, you would be totally correct. If you said Rempel is one of the best NATs in the league at any position you would be, understandably, laughed at.

Really?  I did?  Pretty sure that was you're interpretation.  IIRC, we were discussing which nats we had that were the best in the league.  I listed our starters that were best at thier position in comparison to other team's starters...

But sure, twist it how you like.  No matter how much of an idiot you think I am, you can't seriously think I would rate Remple in the same league as a Sinopoli, or a Singleton...  pretty sure "period" was not in the discussion.

There you go moving the goal posts again. The conversation was about signing him period and you came out swinging before anyone even gave mention of what a fair price might be. The numbers then moved to about 160-170 k (around what Dressler makes) and you were still calling him over the hill, a locker room problem that didn't play well last year while ironically pumping the tires of us signing an older SJ Green, and a seriously under achieving Ernest Jackson.

Words like Adropious Bowman and over the hill were literally the first words out of your mouth even when people were throwing out Dressler like salary numbers. It's nice that the threads can stay up for past reflection so goal posts don't get moved all the time.

Big news for the Ti-Cats...this makes them a better team.  I suspect ol June isn't planning on coaching forever this is the succession plan for him.  I don't think it's that common to have an Assistant Head coach and not have any coordinator duties as well.

June Jones, Head Coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, announced Thursday that Orlondo Steinauer has been named Assistant Head Coach of the football club, returning to the team after a one-year stint as the Fresno State Bulldogs? Defensive Coordinator in 2017.

?Orlondo is an accomplished CFL coach with a great track record at this level. He?s a coach whose great work ethic, intelligence, knowledge of the Canadian game and ability to get the most out of his players will be a huge asset to our staff,? said Jones. ?We?re very happy to bring him home to Hamilton after an exceptional year at Fresno State. I know these decisions are always big for coaches and families, and I?m thrilled as the head coach that someone of Orlondo?s character and talent is joining the staff as my assistant head coach. This is a great thing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats organization. After speaking with him at length and from talking to people in the organization, including some of the players, I know this addition will help us in our quest to bring a Grey Cup Championship back to Hamilton.?

Last season, Steinauer was part of Fresno State?s remarkable turnaround, posting a 10-4 record and winning the Hawaii Bowl over the University of Houston. The team was just one-year removed from a 1-11 record and became the second team in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) history to go from double-digit losses one season to double-digit wins the next.

?This was a big decision for our family, and I?m unbelievably excited to join the Tiger-Cats and June Jones? staff as his Assistant Head Coach,? said Steinauer. ?Our family has spent the vast majority of our lives in Southern Ontario together and the opportunity right now in Hamilton was perfectly aligned with my personal and professional priorities, which obviously include bringing a Grey Cup back to the great fans of the Tiger-Cats.?

Steinauer added, ?This was certainly not an easy decision to leave the situation at Fresno State, which has been incredible. I want to thank all of the great people, players and coaches at Fresno State, who all contributed to a memorable season, to say the least.?

Steinauer had previously served four years on Kent Austin?s coaching staff in Hamilton (2013-16), originally joining the organization as Defensive Coordinator on January 3, 2013, before being promoted to Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator on May 27, 2016. The Seattle, Washington native?s defensive units helped lead the Ticats to two Grey Cup appearances (2013, 2014), consistently ranked at or near the top of the league in numerous defensive categories, and produced multiple CFL All-Stars, including Ted Laurent (2014, 2015), Delvin Breaux (2014), Simoni Lawrence (2015), Emanuel Davis (2015), Craig Butler (2015) and John Chick (2016).

Steinauer?s 11-year coaching career also includes stops with the Toronto Argonauts (2010-12) and Western Washington University (1996-98) when he was still an active player. As a player, he captured two Grey Cup rings in 13 CFL seasons as a dominant defensive back with the Ottawa Rough Riders (1996), Tiger-Cats (1997-2000) and Argonauts (2001-08). He was named an all-star at three different positions (cornerback, halfback and safety), earning six divisional all-star nods and five CFL all-Star honours in total. His 1,178 interception return yards are the second most in CFL history.

I said I didn't want to pay a premium for a guy who is going to drop balls.  I was even worried that he might take $150k but come because he would have 2 QB's that could actually throw to him...  at $140k, he is a steal though.  I'll put up with a couple drops at that price.

Anyways...Greg Jones intrigues me. But I think he?s only an option at MLB, not WIL.

Jones would have been my pick over all the FA MLBs. He was very good in both Sask. and Tor. and was wisely snapped up by the Redblacks last year out of fear that they might loose Reed. Reed left the Redblacks so now they insert a more than capable replacement who know the defensive scheme.

That's sound recruiting.
