Title: 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics thread
Post by: The Zipp on January 11, 2018, 04:28:53 PM
The 2018 Winter Olympics are less than a month away!! There is something special about cheering for our great country during this event.  Hockey will be a bit different without the NHL players but once it gets going I am sure it will still be exciting to watch.

The roster for the men's team was annonced this morning.

I think it's fair to say Canada won't be the dominant powerhouse it was like in 2002, 2010, or 2014. Thanks, NHL. >:(

Nice to see a few pieces from the Spengler Cup championship team.

Yes, but most countries will have similar talent levels available as well. Exception being maybe Russia with guys like Datsyuk and Kovalchuk playing in the KHL.

I've already got my Rob "The Hammer" Klinkhammer jersey on!

Winter Olympics is always tons of fun to watch, but I would be lying if I didn't admit I'm 40-50x less interested without the NHL players. I feel like I watched more of the rest of the Olympics when they were a part of it. Going to give it my all to get it up for Team Canada Men's hockey, but it might be a bit harder (lol).

I always enjoy Women's Olympic hockey, though. That will be great no matter what.

You guys are just too focused on Men?s Hockey ? even though they aren?t technically the best we have as a country the minute they are chosen to represent our Canada we should be cheering them on?it can be our own ?miracle on ice? (gotta think of something better than though)?besides hockey there are so many other great stories to follow ? we are fortunate to have some of the best TV coverage in the world available to us that getting immersed in all the action is so fun!

Love the Olympics ? especially the winter ones ? skiing, skating, bobsled. curling etc etc.

GO CANADA!!

Yeah the other stuff is lots of fun, but NHL players playing for their country was a completely and totally different thing altogether. Like I said, I feel like following it made me follow the other events and get more hyped for the whole thing.

I'll be cheering for Canada and following a good amount of events, but you've gotta admit we've taken an enormous hit on the most important event to Canada.

Ya, the Olympics as a whole will still be good, I like watching a lot of the events. For me, men's hockey was absolutely the crown jewel of the games and winning felt important. I would have set my alarm at any time to watch every game. Now it's sort of a laugh, and that's fine, in Rob "The Hammer" Klinkhammer we trust, but I'll catch his highlights when I wake up. It's just different.

I agree! Winter Olympics are Canada's best showing. Moguls, snowboarding, bobsled, luge, figure skating, speed skating are all events that will likely bring medals for Canada- and maybe even gold! Can't wait! Work preparation is going to suffer a bit during that time...especially with the Jets still playing too.

If the two teams were to ever play each other I think the Moose could beat team Canada 7-2.
I assume most of the other teams at the olympics will have underwhelming rosters as well.
I think Jim Slater might be playing for the US 😮 well good for him if true!

I think it's a black eye for hockey putting these kinds of players out there in an Olympics.

Caught only a bit of the Opening Ceremony while getting ready for work. Seemed impressive from what I saw. I'm not digging the 15 hour time difference though.

Hopefully our snowboarder Laurie Blouin is okay after taking a hard fall in her training run. She is the defending world champion and medal hopeful. But more importantly, you don't want to see her career or Olympic experience ended with a bad injury.

didn't see any of the game against Sweden so I can't comment at all on it, but that shot attempt against a strong Korean team in the 9th was just wrong IMO.  Too aggressive for that time and score in the game.

All in cheering for whoever represents Canada but between us I wish JJ was wearing the Maple Leaf this week.  Maybe Rachel can turn it around - I hope she can!

Re: Team Homan:

If Jones couldn't wear the leaf, I'm glad Homan is. But, I agree that run back attempt was too aggressive too soon. Miskew normally nudges Homan to make those shots, so when she's telling Rachel to draw for 1, you have to wonder if Olympic nerves got the best of her. Credit to South Korea, though - they made every shot.

Homan is in a fight now. I hope she's able to get a win for this next one and get some momentum going.

Women's hockey: Man, what a game. Lacasse was the difference maker. Team need to be better at supporting Poulin when she's being double-teamed every time she touches the puck. She had one shot on net. That game could have easily tipped in the US's favour, but Canada held on.

I would have rioted. They had the better skate, and I'm honestly shocked the French scored as high as they did during their short program. After the French scored so high, I was nervous too. According to my fitbit my resting heart rate was 134 bpm during their program. Their short dance saved them in the end. Skating judges are so crooked though. Someone posted a graphic if the judges scoring during the short program and the French AND US judges gave Virtue and Scott the lowest scores.

Man, Team Homan is struggling during these games. It's been such a grind for them just to get to 3-3, and with 3-4 they're staring down the barrel of not even making the podium.

Ouch is a good word.

You can tell Homan was in shell shock in her interview. "We missed Key shots" was all she could say to Colleen Jones. Team Homan is a better team than what they were this week and the result is a hard pill to take. Muirhead is no pushover, and she will be the one I'm rooting for down the rest of the stretch.

The world has gotten better. Korea is in first place right now. KOREA.

Favourite Olympic moment so far: Canadian curler Rachel Homan's husband double-fisting his third and fourth beers while watching his wife compete against Japan. It's 9am in Korea. Not all heroes wear capes.  #PyeongChang2018

That said, great PK and fending them off the rest of the time.

Off to OT...

I hate shootouts.

Even if Canada had won, they do not belong in gold medal deciding games. I would have gladly stayed up to watch another 6 periods of OT hockey than watch an Olympic gold be decided on a skills competition.

That being said, credit to the US women's team. They played better.

If only we'd have been able to bring our NHL players, we could have beat the US ;)

Looks like womens hockey is taking the same development track the NHL has, and we are seeing smaller, faster teams beating the big bruising teams...  Canada might have to get a little younger and faster to keep up.  Stacey looks like the future for us, flashes of very good play from her...

Ditto.

I realize any only takes one mistake and shot the other way, but TC was having difficulty keeping up with the speed of the US 4v4 on the big ice.

The last 5 minutes of OT, Cdn women were absolutely gassed. The lines were constantly being juggled to try and inject some life.

It didn't seemed like it to me. Canada iced what seemed like 9 players for 95% of a 20 minute 4on4 OT. I think if they juggled the lines a bit they would have seen a better outcome, or at least would have stood a chance at ending it before the shootout.

If it was 5 on 5, then sure use your bench.

4 on 4 on big ice changes the game completely. TC had more Hendricks & Lowry types than Ehlers & Connor types.

In championship games I wish they would stick to 5v5 for OT.

Yeah, Bettman is the commissioner and he does the bidding for the Board of Governors. It's also his job to do what's best for the NHL from a business standpoint.

The IOC, who basically threw the IIF under the bus, refused to cover the costs associated with NHL players going to Olympics (travel, accommodation, insurance) and the NHL didn't want to foot the bill, much less lose revenue on shutting down the season for at least two weeks. Neither side could work out a compromise.

from a logical standpoint, I agree with Bettman.  The IOC makes millions of dollars form the NHL players being at the Olympics.  If they don't want to share that with the NHL or at the very least cover some of the NHL's costs, that's on the IOC, not Bettman.  The IOC is just being selfish here.

Yes, I get why Bettman and the owners are against it, and why the IOC is, as always, dysfunctional. In the end, everyone in the world minus 31 governors, one commissioner, and however many people do the decision making with the IOC end up losing.

I couldn't care less if NHL players are in the Olympics, but if they're not, do a real world cup every four years. Not the fake one that they ran into Toronto with the young guns and that. Real best on best with qualifying for the teams. In fact, that would end up being better than the Olympics anyway.

Both parties are to blame, IMO. This was about money and self-interest from both the IOC and the NHL. Greed on both sides essentially blew this opportunity to showcase the world's best arguably the biggest stage.

I think that's more or less the plan. But I also think what was done in 2016 will be the norm going forward: making it as flashy and unique as possible. It's meant to make money, after all. And the 2016 WHC made its fair share.
