Title: Winnipeg @ Edmonton Pre-Game
Post by: Pigskin on August 16, 2026, 07:10:03 PM
Edmonton is next level right now. The Bombers are going to have to cleanup there penalties and D breakdown.

Their defence is really good. The offence has come down to earth a little bit. They are certainly in that 2nd tier of teams behind Montreal with Saskatchewan. It will be our toughest game so far - and we've certainly been beat down by teams that were significantly worse than Edmonton already.

Game will be won on the line of scrimmage.

Protect Zach and cream Cody.  Only way we have a chance.  Tall order.

Ya, our pass rush is good, so that may limit the damage, however, they are weak against the run, so Rankin and Leake will have big days. Our speical teams will have to be extra special and our offense not turn the ball over, but they're scoring 30+ on us, keep having flashbacks to the BC game and if their fullback can cut us a new one, what is Rankin and Leake going to do?!?!

Ya the problem is going to be trying to get pressure on Fajardo while being somewhat run responsible. The historical run performance against BC that broke a 60 year record might get beat two weeks later by Edmonton because Rankin and Leake are scary and it's hard to image an scenario where they don't shred us. Every week I hope JY has figured it out and every week it looks basically as bad or within the margin of error we're used to.

I see Fajardo in his post game presser proclaiming the Elks are a great team, not a good team , but a great team. Bulletin board material that I hope we use. They are a decent team, top third in the league,  but they are beatable, just ask Montreal and Saskatchewan. That hardly makes them a 'great' team.

The BC game was the outlier in terms of run defence over the past 6 games. Aside from that game, really the final 6 minutes of that game, the run was much improved over the first 3 games of the season.

Not that I'm optimistic. I'm not sure how we move the ball at all against Edmonton unless we get a Brady show again and get some miracles via ST and turnovers.

Nick Anderson will shut Brady down

If we're just running him up the gut, sure. I hope after last week we can evolve beyond that.

You're right. Even against the Redblacks Brady had some pretty average rushing numbers. Basically ziltch in the second half. If he can be effective in the short passing game it can still work out. Need to figure out how to make him count when teams take away the interior run lanes, clearly.

The mantra of make them one dimensional is key to beating edm. You need to take Rankin away, like all the teams have been doing since we last played edm. You must make Cody rely on the pass.

Problem is, he's a dink and dunk qb, which is our kryptonite. The only way we'll stop that is getting in lanes and/or getting to the qb quickly. It'll actually be good practice for when we face SSK.

We did a good job against Rankin last time. If we keep him under 100 then we have a chance to win.

Just make sure we don't give Cody the free run to the rail for 1st down, because he'll shred you on that every time. And he never slides. That means someone needs to stay in the flat.
