Title: 6 game IR rules?
Post by: Blue In BC on July 18, 2026, 02:44:40 PM
What are the rules for players that are extended on the 6 game IR?

1. Are they able to practice immediately since they were able to do so as part of the 1st 6 game stint.
2. If they are activated after another 1 - 3 more games, is that the only part of the SMS which counts.

I ask because we have several players which pass the 1st 6 game IR stint after this game. Hard to determine whether they are extended, moved to AR, PR or 1 game IR.

Ball, Clercius, Novak and Schmekel all fall into the group in question.  Dixon and Woodbey would be available after game 7.

I can imagine Ball, Clercius and Schmekel all as candidates to be added next week, regardless of new injuries this week.

Clercius is an upgrade over both Cobb or Corcoran as a receiver but also as a blocker IMO.

Ball and Schmekel replaces Bouliane and Stuart is my guess but Novak is in the mix as well. Both Ball and Novak are good ST players.

Seems like they've been putting off some of these decisions for awhile now but they'll have to make a few changes next week, don't think anybody wants to go back on the 6 game or the PR, might be some hard decisions made and a few cuts.

I'm not sure if they were putting it off. These players only started practice after game 4. Barring new injuries it does become a bit of a math problem with space on the roster overall.

It's why I posed the question about possible extensions until a need exists to activate.

Several teams could use some of our ST players so maybe a trade for a 2027 draft choice?

1. No practice. When a player is extended on the 6-game injured list it is treated as a new 6-game stint.

2. Up to two times per year, a team can remove a player who had been extended on the 6-game injured list and the SMS for the second (partial) stint will not count. It is the team option if/when they exercise this option.

Hmmmm. Ok that seems counter productive for item 1 but that clarifies the situation. It will make the ultimate decisions be made in real time. Not much point in extending players when they are healthy enough for full practice.

Neither does moving them to the 1 game IR but we know teams do that often. Next week roster choices will be interesting to see how they deal with extra bodies. I suppose RR is an option but teams haven't really been using that often. Same net result as moving to 1 game IR.

Most of the players are rookies or non starters ( ST'ers ) with the exception of Clercius.

I think every rookie should be willing to go on the PR if the team needs them to shuffle the roster around managing injuries, if the player doesn't accept that reality they don't belong on the team.  It gets trickier with vet players, I'm skeptical with what they're doing with Vanterpool, and if he's injured or just being hid out of sight. Hardly played last season and looks the same this season, why are they hanging onto this guy, maybe he's Stan's chauffeur?

Sure for rookies but it's still a question of cumulative space on the PR. Most if not all of the players on the 6 game IR are at least 2nd year players. There could be a couple of Canadian rookies that could get bumped to the PR from the AR, but then who is released to make that space?

Vanterpool status is unknown as far as injury. He can't practise for a few more weeks if he is healthy at that time.

Is it retroactive to the last time the player dressed, or to the last time the player practiced?

If a player hasn't practiced or played in 2 weeks, does putting him on the 6 game start at week 3?
