Title: Bombers add former BC LB Mike Smith Jr.
Post by: VictorRomano on January 28, 2026, 01:33:56 PM
According to CFL's transactions page.

Smith Jr (5'11", 244#, Baylor) spent 2024 on the PR & most of 2025 on BC's AR.

Looks like a candidate to compete at MLB and a spot on the PR.

2026-01-27   WPG   ADD   Active Roster
2025-06-01   BC   DEL   Free Agent
2024-11-18   BC   TRF TO GAME ROSTER   Active Roster
2024-11-05   BC   ADD   Future Active
2024-11-03   BC   DEL   Practice Roster
2024-09-23   BC   ADD   Practice Roster

From this it looks like 2024 on the PR, and then to keep him, he was put on the AR to avoid him becoming a FA, and then released June 1, before teh season started, and remained a FA all last year.

5'11, 244 is a bowling ball.  If he was a prospect, why didn't BC sign him when they released Awe?

TS/ST fodder, of which we have TOO much at the LB spot right now... especially for an American.  Why?

It looks like 244 is a mistake. I have seen 231 a number of times. Two pre-season games in the CFL doesn't tell us that much.

College stats have him 5'11 244, same as CFL.CA, but WBB have him 6'1 231.

Weird

Because BC signed Darnell Sankey prior to releasing Awe.

Yeah, this is why I find it weird when people have arguments about what positions players should be in or moved to based on their height/weight.

We do not have accurate information.

We make assessments based on the information we see and the highlight videos. In those he appears to be an inside type of LB more often. Tackling stats suggest he's in on a lot of plays which also suggests MLB type.

Regardless it will depend on his speed and football IQ. Our LB's are set so he's injury insurance and might be a PR guy.

cfl.ca is having its Genius issues again.

They have Broxton listed as 230 lbs right now:

I tried to look up stats yesterday and the defensive stats were listed beside the QB names.

Could be right.  Top 10 in tackles last year.

6 MLBs
3 WLBs
1 SLB
