Toronto Argonauts leave QB Chad Kelly off roster again despite Nick Arbuckle injury
By 3Down Staff -September 18, 2025
The Toronto Argonauts have extended Chad Kelly's tenure on the six-game injured list for another week, despite serious question marks at the quarterback position.
With CFL passing leader Nick Arbuckle slated to miss this game due to a calf injury, the Argonauts have elected to start Jarret Doege. Moreover, Kelly will not even dress for the game, as rookie Max Duggan has been elevated off the practice roster to fulfill the league's three QB quota.
Kelly teased a possible return to the lineup on social media two weeks ago but was left off the roster for last week's win over Edmonton. The 31-year-old has since posted a mea culpa to his Instagram page, stating he was not yet 100 percent and crediting "incredible support from the front office, MLSE, and medical staff" for his continued recovery.
The native of Buffalo, N.Y., hasn't played for the Argonauts since he suffered a broken leg in last year's East Final. Entering the week, head coach Ryan Dinwiddie was clear that Kelly would not be "rushed" back, regardless of the QB situation.
Doege saw the field in a relief effort against Edmonton, completing three-of-six pass attempts for 35 yards and engineering the game-winning drive with only one minute left. The 27-year-old previously dressed for 20 regular-season games over two seasons with the Elks, throwing for 593 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions and rushing eight times for 23 yards.
Elsewhere, the Argos will get two significant returns to the lineup. Rookie safety Derek Slywka will be back over the top after missing the past two games with an ankle injury, and Canadian Anthony Vandal takes back over from Shane Richards at left guard. Canadian linebacker Ryder Varga (knee) has been placed on the six-game injured list, while American defensive back Delonte Hood has been returned to the practice roster.
The Toronto Argonauts (5-8) will host the Montreal Alouettes (6-7) at BMO Field on Friday, September 19 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT. The Alouettes are coming off a shocking 48-31 upset win over Saskatchewan, while the Argonauts completed the comeback to beat Edmonton 31-30.
The weather forecast in Toronto calls for a high of 19 degrees with clear skies. The game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on TSN 690 in Montreal and TSN 1050 in Toronto.

DL Shawn Oakman returns for Montreal Alouettes after healthy scratch
By 3Down Staff -September 18, 2025
The Montreal Alouettes have sent their message and will be re-inserting veteran defensive lineman Shawn Oakman back into the lineup this week.
Oakman was one of three surprising healthy scratches last week, joined by defensive end Shawn Lemon and receiver Cole Spieker. While those two remain out for what the club has officially termed "load management", Oakman is slated to return to the defensive tackle rotation. Kori Roberson Jr. will return to the practice roster to make room.
The 33-year-old was having a strong statistical season prior to his benching, which came at the end of a five-game losing streak. In 12 games, he has made 25 tackles and recorded four sacks while forcing two fumbles.
The largest loss for the Alouettes this week is that of running back Travis Theis, who has been placed on the six-game injured list with an ankle issue. The 24-year-old native of Pratt, Kan. has rushed 70 times for 365 yards, caught 19 passes for 162 yards, returned 19 kickoffs for 364 yards, and 13 punt returns for 175 yards and one touchdown over 12 games this season.
Stevie Scott III, who recorded the team's first 100-yard game last week, will get the start, while Eno Benjamin is set to dress as insurance.
Defensive back Ciante Evans (hip) will sit out this week on the one-game injured list. Don Callis will suit up in his place.

3 interceptions in the first half. This is not the same MBT as last week.
Doege looked good on the first drive but hasn't done much since. 94 yards net offence in the half.
Neither team has established the run yet. OK, Toronto doesn't even try to run.
this game kinda stinks so far
toronto doesnt seem to have problems finding dline not sure why we continue to struggle
Understatement 👆
Patterson is struggling with the football. He put one of the ground but was saved by Snead. Nearly fumbles a snap then throws an incompletion.
Toronto runningbacks 6 carries for 2 yards.
Scott not as good as last week
Maas is an idiot. He has James Morgan warming up implying he's taking MBT out, and all MBT does is march the field score a Td and a 2 point convert. I am hoping he's sick of playing for a lunatic and comes here next season, if we had him as our #2 we d blow the doors off of Ottawa tomorrow instead of losing with streveler

Is it raining? Why so many drops?
Terrible football game, the CFL is embarrassing itself putting on games of this poor quality after Labour Day.
Great catch by Snead, made it despite PI
Argos third string looks better than our #2
there will be a close finish - andre putting on a classic show - love that guy
Maas and Dinwiddie coach with a lot of balls man, shows how they've beat us in last 3 cups
With Zach we could probably beat these teams in Crossover.
But Oshea will need to stop being such a fool.
These are some incredibly weak PI's being called.
Maas challenging and winning 2 plays Oshea would never have challenged either
not sure about the onside kick attempt at that point of the game.
Agree, respect it though.
Not sure about going for 2 up 7 by MTL.
Dogee looks better than Stev.
As sloppy this game has been, it still feels like a chess match between the coaches and a competition.
Bomber games are just so slow and boring these days
mcGloster with a bad penalty.
grant with a great return.
Walter's still can't find Janarions cell number
fg?????
wasn't a long third down
Quote from: Jesse on September 20, 2025, 01:52:49 AMThat was... a choice.
it might have been the right one. montreal inept on offense
I guess it worked though. They have a chance now.
Would have been a long FG on previous 3rd

Argos loss puts them one more step closer to missing the playoffs due to a crossover. Both the Lions and Bombers could potentially be 4 points up on them by the end of the weekend. OTOH, both could lose but still be up on chances for a crossover.

dimwiddie made a dumb decision though with over 2 minutes he doesnt try a 47 yard fg and gambles on 3rd and 4, but then when the clock goes down to 135 and 3rd and 4 he goes for the fg. He wasted 30 seconds.
Or even going for it would have made sense. Theres bold and theres dumb

i think that was the right call, should have also gone for it instead of kicking the FG
Some interesting coaching decisions and outcomes
The scouts who found Herslow are the winners this year. He's the best new IMP this season. Like a young Ellingson or Acklin, but likely better.

Nothing more embarrassing for the CFL than the "Get Drunk, na na na na" song. Hearing that ad naseum is really going to draw all kinds of new fans to the league. The new commish should immediately fire whoever made the decision to promote that tripe and get something a little more wholesome in there.
Is that Suitor's favorite song? Was it his idea? LOL!
I actually thought it was PI on Polk on the last interception, but no challenges left

I dunno, Snead from Montreal has looked pretty decent this year too and made a circus catch on a long bomb tonight
4Q8:08 Dump pass to Mital, booth guys note that it's a very favorable TOR spot. Ya, that's an understatement. This is a major whiff by the refs. The ball is, at best, at the 39.5. And they give it to TOR right at the 38?
It's clear as day, REC catches the ball facing the QB, makes no forward progress at all, and is immediately pushed back towards his dead ball line. Dude's feet never get closer than the 40 YL.
I'm not sure I've ever seen the refs botch such an easy motionless spot before. If they spot it correctly it's 3rd & 1.5 or 2. Instead it's 3rd & 1 inch, allowing TOR to continue the drive.
Homer ref? EITS didn't want to step in for the "integrity of the game"?
Haha, now I see TSN actually showed another replay and pointed out how the spot was complete nonsense. Rare for TSN (other than Dunigan) to call out the league for shenanigans.
Quote from: Blueforlife on September 20, 2025, 01:19:30 AMScott not as good as last week
It's tough against McManus. That guy wins games just by himself. And that TOR DL guy who sheds blocks like they are JV squad. Hard to run against that team when those 2 are healthy.
Wow. When's the last time a coach, especially Maas, won 2 challenges in a game??
I agree on the first overturn, but am a bit surprised they overturned the 2nd. Ya, I think the ball moved enough to be incomplete, but that video evidence was hardly "clear and obvious".
I'm pretty sure the overly "clear and obvious" memo from last season is now moot. It looks like command is back to wanting to get things "right", and they are back to using slowmo, freezeframe, and zoom.
That's a neat OSK trick H<20 more letters with lots of H's and J's> tried to kick in the 4th. TOR in clear season-desperation mode, pulling out their high-end post-season-only trick plays. That's how badly they need this game.
I like how TOR only had 1 recovery guy lined up wide and everyone else deep behind the K acting like they were still getting ready.
Not sure I've ever seen that.

That's why I keep posting the BE BOLD thread after GC losses. WFC is not bold. We are the most risk-averse play-it-safe only-by-the-book team in the league right now. And it used to be good enough when our team was 2021 good.
Now, not so much. I wish we'd plan in depth as much as Maas/Dinwiddie clearly do, and I wish we'd BE BOLD more often.
I'm nearly positive the only thing that can get you that chirping misconduct is to use the N word. Boy, was Snead miffed.
Refs better not listen to any rap music, or visit any team's locker room. They'd need a heck of a lot more flags.
P.S. REALLY STUPID by McGloster
Did Slykwa re-injure the same problem as before? Dude plays as hard as Loffler, and just as good. But maybe can only stay about as healthy as Loffler. Which means nearly never.
Scott & Philpot breaking fantasy hearts all across Canada. Both go from career-defining games to absolute zeroes.
Philpot dropped 2 easy ones? Maybe he told Lemon to bet on TOR? ;) ;)
I always find it funny that when things aren't going great Maas always looks like he's crying. Well, I guess crying is better than ruining Kenwoods.
Quote from: dd on September 20, 2025, 01:55:06 AMDoege is absolute light years better than streveler, light years
Uh, no. Did you see his Brohm-balls? Straight into the turf. Just because he got lucky with a deep shot or 2 to super-talented RECs doesn't make him better than Strev! Not that Strev is great, but don't raise Doege to something he is not. Doege will be lucky to be on any team's PR next season.

But yet it ALMOST worked out. If he had Castillo he could have tried a 58er (depending on the wind). If he had had a real QB in the game they likely get in closer range instead of a WFC-looking INT.
Dinwiddie had almost all the answers all night, keeping them in the game with Brohm at the helm, but he just couldn't get the correct call on that last pass. Hey, wait, I've seen that before! It's us!
That was total DPI on that INT too, but it wasn't catchable anyhow because Polk was going downfield and QB was throwing a dig.
Actually an exciting finish. Crap game otherwise.

I was talking rookies, new scouting finds. Snead is 3rd year. I can't think of another rookie IMP REC as good as Herslow. (NAT DP is a different story, like that 6'99" guy CGY drafted 1st overall.)
Absolute superb D outing by TOR though. I bet Dinwiddie & Shivers & like 10 asst DCs planned that all week. They knew the D was the only way they were going to win, with Doege starting.
Remember, this is a MTL team that destroyed SSK IN MOSAIC last week. MBT didn't have even 1 minute to do his thing. It was pressure non-stop against a pretty good OL. Stunts galore. Delayed blitzes galore.

And all we heard early in the season was the argos lost all the D line players, which they did, and they replaced them with nobody's and had mega pressure all night. That's what happens when you have a real DC, you can scheme and get pressure. Not us. sit back and let them take it to us. Ghandi would be proud of our defensive approach--totally passive!!!
MBT was terrible for most of the game. Turn-overs killed Mtl. They still managed to win tho.
