Title: Sheahan / ST appreciation thread
Post by: Blueforlife on August 22, 2025, 03:35:27 PM
Punting been absolutely great.  So happy we stayed the course after a small but vocal group suggested we move on.  He has got heat over the years due to his leg strength.  The big legs in the league are great as well but he has proven his directional punting and near top net yards makes him so valuable.  Love his game and how consistent he has become!

Our FG kicking as per usual been great! :)

Kick coverage has been much improved and we are not getting too much pressure on our kickers as well.

Props to STs, a third of the game and a non issue for this club.  Really key we keep this up!

Mike Miller has been really good as special teams coordinator. The Bombers special teams may be the best in the CFL.

Yes agree, he will likely continue to grow and could transition to a bigger coaching role down the road

So, I think this is a bit like the "mission accomplished" banner on USS Abraham Lincoln.

Special teams has been significantly better over the last 2-3 games and has been trending upwards in proportion with the other units but there's work to be done.

Sheahan had a great game yesterday and seems to have a bit longer leg this year, so credit there. He still doesn't have the kick you need to flip the field if we're backed up on the goal line but we haven't been in that situation much lately and so it hasn't been an issue. It's still a punt that many other punters in the CFL have and still one we're going to wish we had down the stretch. We seem to have made the choice that the tradeoff is worth it, but it's still a tradeoff. The weaker leg compared to many other kickers is just a reality.

Our kick cover has been much better than last year but it's not noticeably better than top teams. It's good. I'd say Montreal's was as good last night. Our return teams have taken way fewer penalties than earlier in the season and Vaval has largely been effective but no one is particularly scared of our returners and we haven't consistently been dangerous outside of the one game.

Sergio has been lights out and that's a surprise to no one.  Things are trending in the right direction though. All we need is.... more patience.

Yes, I'm so happy we waited through two years of league worst punting to get 2 games of above average punting.

We did it!

He has been punting great and has been nothing but consistent in his time here, having an outstanding year.  Near the top in net yards this year (source last nights broadcast).  The numbers don't lie.  Direction punting has been just great.  We are not getting burnt on returns and our punting is helping us win games.  I like to give credit where credit is due.  Those that called for him to get cut were wrong.  Pillar of strength for the club.  We have our punter and it's an important position.  Saying two games of above average punting isn't correct, he has been much better than that most of the year and I don't remember  bad game, correct me if I'm wrong.  Historically yes average punting is low for him.  But his net punting has never been league worst to my knowledge.  I haven't been able to find the stats to see how he stacked up last two years but someone will have that ;).

The idea that a big leg is better isn't always correct.  All about net yards imo.  Don't get me wrong a big leg with a big net is best but we have 2nd best option here imo.

He will show his worth as the season goes on, when the weather gets bad you need consistency and directional punting.  He can punt well in bad weather weather and winds.  He limits the damage the big returners do.  I am very happy with him and a big supporter from the start.

Junkie's stats showed why we keep Sheahan.  It's not the traditional booming backed-up John Ryan, we all know that.  If he keeps up his performance all this season there is no way we're letting him walk.  So better get used to him!

Sheahan punts are like a box of chocolates, you never know whatchyer gonna get.  Neither does the returner.

Love it my friend, thanks for the post and we are in complete agreement

The quote is priceless, nailed it.  The string of agreement between us on the Bombers is on an epic run.  While I do value everyone's opinion on here and that is what makes this place great and balanced, it's nice to have like minded friends on here and I do like the lighter side of your posts.
