QB Dustin Crum to make third start for Ottawa Redblacks against Edmonton
By 3Down Staff -August 21, 2025

The Ottawa Redblacks will have Dustin Crum at the helm once again in Week 12, after starting quarterback Dru Brown was placed on the one-game injured list with a knee issue.

Brown has thrown for 1,842 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions this season, going 2-6 as a starter. He missed three games earlier this season due to a hip injury suffered against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and was also unable to finish Ottawa's loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 7 due to a hit to the head.

Crum has gone 1-1 through two starts, while coming off the bench for the team on three occasions. He has completed 58-of-93 passes (62.3 percent) for 625 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, while also running for 199 yards and six short-yardage scores. He will be backed up by veteran Matthew Shiltz and Tyrie Adams, who has been activated off the practice roster for this game.

Offensively, the team will be making just one other significant change, as receiver Bralon Addison has been ruled out with a rib injury. Andre Miller will step into the starting role, while Canadian veteran Luther Hakunavanhu will play in front of rookie Keelan White as he continues to battle an ankle issue.

By contrast, the defensive backfield has almost entirely been re-ordered with linebacker Davion Taylor (hamstring) and defensive back Robert Priester (head) placed on the one-game injured list, and defensive backs Bennett Williams (hamstring) and Justin Howell (hamstring) headed to the six-game.

Alijah McGhee returns from injury to resume his field corner spot, allowing Gavin Heslop to move to boundary halfback. Deandre Lamont bumps to safety, while Canadian rookie King Ambers makes his first career start at field halfback. Only boundary corner C.J. Coldon remains in the same slot as last week, with Shakur Brown, Bentlee Sanders, and Canadian rookie Eric Cumberbatch drawing in to provide depth.

In the linebacking corps, Jovan Santos-Knox will move to the vacant weakside spot and allow Ace Eley to start in the middle. Canadian Zachary Philion will dress for the first time after being signed this week, as defensive tackle Muftah Ageli drops to the practice roster.

The Ottawa Redblacks (3-7) will host the Edmonton Elks (3-6) at TD Place Stadium on Friday, August 22 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT. The Elks are coming off a 28-20 win over the Toronto Argonauts, while the Redblacks lost on a walk-off field goal to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The weather forecast in Ottawa calls for a high of 27 degrees with a mix of sun and cloud. The game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 880 CHED in Edmonton and TSN 1200 in Ottawa.

Edmonton Elks demote two to practice roster ahead of clash with Ottawa
By 3Down Staff -August 21, 2025

The Edmonton Elks are keeping their roster mostly intact while riding a two-game winning streak.

Just two minor tweaks to the roster will take place ahead of their matchup with Ottawa on Friday. Most notably, fullback Jacob Plamondon, who recorded a special teams tackle last week, has been demoted to the practice roster. Canadian linebacker Josiah Schakel, who has four special teams tackles in seven games, has re-entered the lineup after being a healthy scratch.

The team has also swapped out their seventh offensive lineman. Mark Evans II, who made four starts early in the season before being relegated to backup duty, has been sent to the practice roster. Greg Eiland will make his debut as the backup tackle after last playing for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas.

The Elks currently have no players on the one-game injured list. Tight end Skyler Griffith; receiver Zach Mathis; defensive linemen Noah Curtis and Tomari Fox; linebackers Nick Anderson, Michael Brodrique, and Olivier Muembi; defensive back Devodric Bynum, and punter Cody Grace all remain on the six-game injured list.

The Edmonton Elks (3-6) will visit the Ottawa Redblacks (3-7) at TD Place Stadium on Friday, August 22 with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT. The Elks are coming off a 28-20 win over the Toronto Argonauts, while the Redblacks lost on a walk-off field goal to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

I tell ya, whether it's Tre Ford or Cody Fajardo, this team sure has trouble holding onto wins.

If it's not the QBs then what is it, coaching? I suspect so.

Really tough as a serious injury and ambulance involved

Both QB's moved the ball quite efficiently, impressed with their performances.  Crum would be a great back up on a top rated team, he often comes close but usually falls short.

He'll be a fine starter for them when Dru comes home in '27

Update from Ottawa RedBlacks

Daniel Okpoko is responsive, and has movement in all extremeties. He has been taken to hospital for further evaluation.

OTT with its extremely dark lights and picture quality again.  Still not resolved from last season.

The capital of Canada can't afford the electricity bills?  Maybe they voted to pay triple carbon tax...

I wonder if it has something to do with the move to LED lighting?  But I think SSK has it too and they are plenty bright.

Whatever it is, it really sucks and makes seeing details quite difficult.

Looked to me like a suddenly.  The contact was nothing, and he got up perfectly fine (can't do that with a busted vertebrae), then did the "something's not right", then did the pass out thing.

Praying for him.

Thanks for letting me know

On field crew did a good job ensuring they didn't move him

It's nice that folks on her show empathy for players in this great league

Moments like this remind how special this place is

Stay awesome

Good to hear he's doing well. It was very strange in that it didn't seem like a play that would result in an injury. He may have taken a knee to the head and was stunned a bit?

When they switched streetlights to LED outside my residence about 9 years ago it seemed blinding, even now I find it bright.

I attach a pic of their lights, seems an odd mixture of 2 and 3 light stacks and all between the goal lines. Can't tell their power or what they aim at. People who attend games there seem to think it is good lighting.

Nearly halfway through this one. EEs are making the RBs look like complete amateur hour.

Dyce has got to go.

Is that what it is?  Always thought their turf looked gray even during day games, thought maybe it was a poor synthetic that doesn't hold it's colour well.

Encouraging update from Don Brennan (TwiXter @SunDoniB)

Good news. After suffering a scary looking injury in last night's #CFL game, Daniel Okpoko was released from hospital when all scans came back negative.

Knew it.  It'll go down as unexplained "we don't know".

Very glad to hear he's well.  Last thing we need in the CFL is a guy dying on the field.  Very good news.

Thanks, that is very interesting!  Then it could actually be the opposite.  It could be that the lights are TOO bright and thus the cams adjust to smaller aperture!  Could be something TSN could adjust for to get more light inside.

It could also be the quality or temperature of the lights.  Could be something that doesn't sync well with the cams.  LEDs emit light in pulses, not continuously, and it can conflict with camera framerates in weird ways.

As for the turf theory, I'm not sure because the players/uniforms also look very dark, not just the turf.

Bottom line: TSN/CFL should fix it because it's annoying as heck.  It's not our job to figure it out!  They're the ones with all the money!
