Canadian REC Brendan O'Leary-Orange out for Hamilton Tiger-Cats against Riders
By 3Down Staff -June 13, 2025
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are rolling with virtually the same roster for their home opener despite a disappointing loss in Week 1, save for one change in the receiving corps.
Canadian pass catcher Brendan O'Leary-Orange has been placed on the one-game injured list after missing practice on Thursday due to his rib cage. The 27-year-old set a career-high with 16 catches for 335 yards and a touchdown last season, following it up with five catches for 55 yards last week.
Fifth-year backup Tyler Ternowksi will get the start and has recorded 28 receptions for 346 yards in 48 career games. Keaton Bruggeling, who dazzled with five catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason finale, draws into the lineup as insurance.
The only other area of concern for the Ticats is on special teams, where rookie returner Isaiah Wooden is listed as a game-time decision with a hamstring injury. It is unclear who would take over for him if he is unable to go, but it would be a significant blow after he took a kickoff back 105 yards for a major in the opener.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-1) will host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) at Hamilton Stadium on Saturday, June 14 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Saskatchewan Roughriders to start RB A.J. Ouellette, dress Ka'Deem Carey as backup against Ticats
By 3Down Staff -June 13, 2025
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have made changes to their backfield following injuries suffered in Week 1, but it won't be the combination many expected.
Ka'Deem Carey will make his Green and White debut against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after being signed earlier this week, but the 32-year-old former East Division all-star will be in a backup capacity. A.J. Ouellette will still make the start behind Trevor Harris despite exiting the opener early with an apparent head injury and being limited on Tuesday.
Instead of Ouellette on the shelf, it will be Canadian backup Thomas Bertrand-Hudon sitting out on the one-game injured list. The 28-year-old had 74 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in relief last week, but is currently dealing with a groin injury that held him out of practice.
The Riders have also lost key starters on both sides of the ball, as weak-side linebacker C.J. Avery (bicep) and Canadian receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker (foot) have both been placed on the six-game injured list. The former generated 59 total tackles and three interceptions as rookie last year, while the latter is coming off a 735-yard campaign.
Canadian special teams standout A.J. Allen will get the nod in the linebacking corps after making four defensive stops in relief last week. Backup safety Jaxon Ford will also draw into the lineup after missing the opener with a hand injury, providing additional depth. Veteran Mitch Picton gets the nod in the vacant receiving spot, while fellow Regina Ram alumnus D'Sean Mimbs will dress for his first career game as a backup.
Changes have also been made along the offensive line, where Canadian Daniel Johnson will make his first start at left tackle following a knee injury to American rookie Payton Collins. With the ratio tweak, American Jacob Brammer will leapfrog into the right guard slot after recovering from a back injury and Zack Fry will serve as the sixth man.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) will visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (0-1) at Hamilton Stadium on Saturday, June 14 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.

It would be fun to see Hammy pull a fast one on the Green Goonies of the Prairie.
huge Bo and Kenny fans tonight!!
hopefully the ex-bombers on the Ti-cats can channel their inner disdain for the riders and lead them to a home victory.
Oskee Weewee (or however it goes)

pardon??!!
the ticats fans have been pretty faithful through some tough seasons..
I'm not so sure about the riders fans.
When Bombers aren't involved, I tend to hope for the team with the best fans, so ticats today.

I've always been on that bandwagon, glad you joined us!!
did i slip into a parallel universe?? we have Bomber fans actually hoping the riders win??
you understand how standings and points work? you know that a home playoff game is huge for the Bombers?
hoping i slip back into the universe where Bomber fans hope and pray the riders lose every game - that's where i want to live..Goldy you are welcome in my universe!
I hate the arrogant BLM, hoping he loses more than the Riders lose, but if there was a way possible, if they both could lose that would be great.
We don't need charity loses from the eastern teams. Our club will take care of business and beat the western teams and get first place and home field advantage. And you can quote me on that one!!

iam sure every sask fan out there would be very happy with winning all their games except the ones against the Bombers in the regular season.
you do you but i am riding with the Bomber fans that always cheer against the riders when it helps the Bombers.
i hope Bo throws for 400 tonight

Bombers are good enough to finish in first regardless of what the Riders do.

Exactly.
BLM can take hike, but a win against the Riders is good enough for me.
Riders defence doesn't look like they showed up today.

I can't believe they let Sask challenge that call so late.

I'm good with that, Sask losses their team timeout
Does Suitor watch the game?
Some of his comments seem like he isn't.
Blind man could even see that it was a TD
robot ref - super impartial, same expression all night.
Is the Rider forum imploded yet due to Lauther? lol

stinky Bo! Does Scotty M know you can run the ball in the CFL? Overrated HC Lol
Love it when BLM loses!!
here is the condensed game - BO is bad, Kenny is great, Lauther is terrible
sask has an easy schedule to start - masking how weak they are. most overrated 2-0 team in the league

I'll happily take charity if it means a W team not wearing blue & gold has 2 less points!

I'm with you. No matter how much we hate the E team, you always root for the E vs the W (except maybe the GC). 2 points is 2 points.

I'm with you too. Ticats fans are hurtin' like we were up to 2018. And I met many nice ones when I was there. There's no E team I'd rather see win a GC more than HAM (OTT a close 2nd). Just not against us...
Ya, it'll suck if they do that with everyone-hates-BLM, but if they start winning it'll be in spite of BLM, not because of him.
That said, their fan base (seats in butts) started dropping precipitously last season. Too much losing is hurting STH, and they have a really old (i.e. dying) fan base (a common refrain in the CFL). It'd be nice if they could reverse that (get in new blood) like SSK and BC seem to be doing.

Ya, we've seen this before. They go to all-24 and confirm the challenge flag hit the turf before the snap. If it did, they "undo" a play. (I'm not sure if the NFL gives this consideration though.)
I'm ok with it, as it's not really the HC's job to make sure the ref sees. Maybe a league spotter should be up in a booth and instantly radio down to refs when a flag hits, rather than relying on a ref 50Y away to notice.
If it was the other way, a ref(s) could potentially rig a game by just ignoring the challenge flag.
Perhaps more importantly, is
why does Mace not understand the completion rules? The fact Kenny drops it after falling is irrelevant, for the simple fact that he was not in the air / jumping / falling when he caught it. And he clearly had possession, then started falling, then dropped it OOB. I knew instantly Mace was full of it, and I think he actually believed he'd be right (even though it was kind of a "two-fer" challenge).
Quote from: barbk on June 15, 2025, 01:44:09 AMBlind man could even see that it was a TD
The issue was the bobble. He caught it awkwardly and appeared to bobble it while still in the EZ.
It's very similar to the 2019 Bailey GC TD where they took the TD back. In the case of Bailey his awkward aspect was he caught it on the back of one of his hands, though it barely moved.
In this SSK one the REC bottom hand does move its position on the ball slightly during a "double clutch" type motion. The top hand stays solid. Command decided that tiny bobble didn't matter... and it "produces more O", which is always a big goal of the CFL. I can live with it, though I have seen these called non-TDs, and it is somewhat interesting they overturned the call on the field (somewhat of a rarity since the 2024 review memo).
But it reignites my PTSD about the '19 GC, LOL.
4Q4:39 HAM would have won a challenge on RTP, BLM was right, head hit and his head snapped like a rag doll. Surprised refs didn't see it, and command could have called it down automatically...
I think they blew their challenge a few plays earlier. Pays to get your challenges right, or leave them in your pocket.
Wow. 4Q1:44 is super clear and obvious IP (as well as offside when the DL reacts). OL is falling forward well in advance of the snap. Not sure I've ever seen the refs miss such an obvious IP before. What the heck is going on... the game was still on the line here.
Why is HAM OC and BLM going for the Hail Mary on 1st down with 50s on the clock? 50s is more than enough time for WPG (or now BC) to run their tempo drill. Ya, you probably go pass-mostly (because you need to get OOB), but you can mix short/mid/long.
And to long bomb it into double coverage... dumb. And not to Kenny! Double dumb!
On the bright side, we know BLM's range: 65Y on that pass attempt. Not bad for a geriatric. Beats Zach's!
Anyone else notice that SSK OC/Trevor has a little strategy/tendency?
For first 2.75Q's or so Trevor threw almost exclusively to the strong side. Every snap he starts reading weak side then chucks it strong side. He looked weak side maybe 3 times during all of that.
Then late 3rd and 4th Q he starts chucking to weak side non-stop: mostly Johnson but also Meyers. And he then ignored strong side.
My hunch is this is all OC trickery, to lull the D into ignoring the weak slot at the end. Which HAM did. Johnson was wide open for the entire 4th and HAM never recovered.
Need to keep an eye on this when we play them.
P.S. SSK RECs still weakest in the league maybe, they only look good because of good OCing and mostly-short/quick pass game. And they seem to be balancing the run better: those explosions force the D to loosen up on the pass.
