QB Mason Fine, REC Brayden Lenius headline Roughriders final roster cuts
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released 21 players ahead of the CFL's roster cutdown deadline, including American quarterback Mason Fine and Canadian receiver Brayden Lenius.
The 27-year-old Fine was engaged in a contentious battle for the backup quarterback role, but lost out to Shea Patterson. Short-yardage option Antonio Pipkin was also released, leaving Trevor Harris, Patterson, and rookie Jack Coan as the three QBs left on the team's roster.

DB Sayles isn't anywhere near to the end of his career. He was showing no signs of turning into Chris Randle (and no slight to Randle: he was amazing until he hit that wall).
BinBC is right: must have been $$. Which means he might be worth a look if he can't find work elsewhere, because he might have to accept much less $$ to re-establish himself. Has he always been HB, never CB? Digging deep in the brain to try to remember, I think you're right, as I can vividly remember his IC woes and the oven-mitts solution!!
(Makes me wonder whatever happened to DB Jones#16, who just kind of disappeared.)
Quote from: Throw Long Bannatyne on June 03, 2024, 03:46:17 AMWhyyyyyy? They have MBT, Ford, Doege on the AR, what possible service could Prukop provide them?
Solid SY. Remember that game-losing 3-try stop vs SSK @Commonwealth in 2023?
MBT won't be doing SY. Ford is a tiny wimp @SY. Doege is much the same. They literally have no SY grinder, unless Corny is still around. Their last SY specialist was Loxley (sp?) and he was also a tiny useless guy @SY.
They are taking a page from our book: get a solid 95%+ SY QB and you will win more games because all you ever need is 8.5Y, not 10.
I think it's a great move. But it might mark a forthcoming cut to one of the existing guys... unless EDM wants to collect QBs like TOR did in 2019. Plus, it keeps Prukop away from us if we decide Strevie isn't going to do SY.

Most times I saw BC play Sayles got burned. Time will tell. He had his good games and his terrible games.

I don't think that's a function of Carey having a good year as much as running being somewhat down league-wide. I don't have the "this time last year" comparisons, but the general feel is that this season is more of a passing season?

Als keeping losing top receivers. I'd expect Mack may be back sooner than 6 games but an ankle injury can be a problem for the rest of the season.
OTOH, the Als are 10 - 1 with little chance of being knocked out of 1st place. If Mack stays on the 6 game IR, they save that amount of SMS and then bring him back healthy for the play offs.
I would have liked Mack to be on the roster against the Lions but it is what it is. Als should still win.
Here's some info on what's being discussed:
Trade deadline:
I dont believe the league has formally announce the trade deadline date but it's been the 1st week of October the last couple of seasons.
What are the restrictions on releasing a veteran player?
As per Article 15 of the CBA, players of certain veteran status must be paid their full salary, pension, playoff and Grey Cup earnings if they are released after a certain point in the season.
Qualified as a Veteran of / Entitled to 100% salary after
Six years or more 9th Regular Season game
Five years 10th Regular Season game
Four years 11th Regular Season game
Full salary would apply to game salary only, future timed bonus payments would not be included since they are most likely worded as a roster bonus (player receives bonus if he is on the roster/under contract at a specific time). Other bonus payments for starts, games played, etc. would have to be met to be received.
Expanded practice rosters:
For a one-month period every season, CFL teams are permitted to carry an additional five practice-roster players.
Starting in 2015 teams have the ability to choose when their 30 day expansion period begins within the league window, which in 2015 started Sept. 5 and ended Nov. 8.
So in theory any team should be in a position to add 5 additional players to their PR if they choose. All veteran salaries are now locked in as we approach either game 12 or 13 for every team.

So what's the idea behind this? How is this supposed to benefit teams? And why not have the PR be that +5 all season long if there's a big benefit?
I understand the expanded rosters for TC and PS... but I'm not sure I understand the rationale of this arbitrary short-term bump.

These are players you want to bring in for next year. They get a sense of the ins and outs and can hopefully be in a position to succeed in training camp when it comes back around (or they realize they want no part of of this and you can cross them off your list).

A PR player costs $750 - $1,000 per game. If you add 5 additional players for 18 games that could add another $90K to the SMS.
More players in practice takes reps away from others so there is a practical aspect as well with having too many players all season.
IIRC, O. Wilson was one of the 5 added late last year. Transactions show as 10/30/23 future active.
EDIT: Note edited the SMS amount for 5 extra PR players for all 18 games.

Yes, nothing changed in that regard. I don't know if he'll be added today. If he isn't then there seems to be more to him being off than the flu. The question then is on the IR for the full 6 games and the play offs? 6 games left so we'd be sheltered from the SMS on the 6 game if he's there for the duration.
No idea what to expect although I had thought he'd be playing this week. Need him back but health is the first issue.

O'Shea seemed to be dead sure Stanley was playing last weekend, the medical staff obviously did not agree. Hate to go back to Covid, but is this still a spreadable enough disease that could disqualify his participation by the team doctor?
We should be used to O'Shea now when his on the mic. He won't reveal anything especially if it concerns his player's health.

Hate to go back to Covid, but is this still a spreadable enough disease that could disqualify his participation by the team doctor?
A) It probably isn't covid because vid doesn't make you vomit. Plus, with all the free tests everywhere, they'd have identified it and likely said so.
B) No. No team treats vid as anything other than a normal seasonal illness now.
My worry is there's more to his "illness" than just a virus. 3 whole weeks now and counting...

The intent of the expanded practice rosters was mainly to have a look at NFL cuts.
Teams can use it for building depth for a playoff run however. The issue is when the 30 days are up the team would need to find roster spots for the guys such as putting them on the 1 game.
Quote from: Blue In BC on September 06, 2024, 02:10:23 PMA PR player costs $750 - $1,000 per game.
Wilson never came to Winnipeg last year as he was signed to a futures contract.
Teams sometimes sign players near the end of the season but their contracts dont start until the following year.

"All-CFL" is so dumb. It doesn't sound nice, is hard to say, takes 3X longer to say, and is frankly just lame. Will players even care about being named "all-CFL" now?
No one in the USA market will have any idea what that means, further alienating the market we're always desperate to sell into.

Depends. Wilson and Cole are back practising now so we may have either / or both back soon.

Very good point. If they are ready we won't need him.

MTL brings back Uguak.
That team is going to be stout... even with Mack out again.
trade, decent player imo

Ya but they've pretty much known this for a week already. They think Sterns is the answer, or Hunchak they just picked up. No Ajou Ajou either. Though Busby might have won himself a starting spot -- though as a rookie he can probably be picked on by a good D.
SSK started the year with a bad R corps, and now it's even worse. Johnson is really the only good one who's producing. KSB is having an off year but is still promising. Emilus is under-performing IMHO.
Talk about a team that could have used a big splash FA R signing! Where'd they spend all the SMS on? The OL and Oullette?
Big news out of BC
A nothing game, be interesting to see if Adams lights it up what controversy arises for the western final

Emilus and KSB may not get a lot of balls thrown their way but they always seem to make big plays with the YAC they gain.

I was just thinking BC should roll with VAJ the rest of the games. They will win nothing with Rourke. VAJ might provide a spark. Should have done it weeks ago, then they could have beat SSK (or maybe us!) for 2nd place.
If VAJ does ok or well (or simply better than Rourke), I don't see how you don't start VAJ in WSF.

Because SSK is all about downfield holding and blocking. They have to be: their whole game is the short pass. They've perfected it. And they are great at finding the line between flag and no-flag.
I bet MOS is secretly impressed by their downfield blocking when doing film study on SSK. He's a huge fan of that too.
